Default Which is sold more...Lock or No lock

I realize that most on this forum don't like the lock. But which version do you think is sold more brand new out the door? I'm thinking that most people who buy a new Smith don't even know much about the lock, and that it doesn't influence their decision to purchase. I think the 642 is Smith's most popular revolver. Do you think they sell more ILS models than the no lock versions? Just curious.

The doors is still open and they need to turn over more units today than 20 years ago. The few that cry about it is less loss in sales than those who buy the down-under gun because of price.

Speaking ONLY for myself, I couldn't care less, lock or NO lock. I have many, more important things to lose sleep over, Lock or NO lock ain't one of them.
But, no purist am I.
In fact I just picked up my 629-6 ,complete with the "IL" and hopefully the grin on my face will eventually disappear. It CAN be a problem at funerals.

My money on no IL. Wouldn't pay for one and don't own one either. Not a snob. Just a eye witness to a 686 locking itself up.

Also can't stand the 36 font stampings or the bead blasted model number and caliber revolvers. Very cheap looking.

It is hard to say. Purists don't want the lock or course. I have seen one person who wanted the lock so they could lock the gun when they weren't using it so it can be a selling point to some. The lock seems to be a non issue to a lot of people.

I only buy older Smith's. If it isn't 30 + years old....it is of no interest to me. YMMV

I would guess the average new S & W revolver buyer doesn't care one way or the other about the lock, and the factory builds fewer no-lock guns overall, so my guess would be more lock-equipped guns are sold.

IL sold more because they are simply available. As for me I don't own any, won't buy any and the market is still full of older models if you look. My personal stand "don't mean much" I reckon.

Read the Question carefully. More IL's are sold NIB than non IL NIB because they make wayyyyyyyyyyyyy more NIB IL's than NIB non IL's.

It's certainly possible they actually know about the lock and it still doesn't influence their decision.

The question, like its answer, is meaningless. It's not like there's a choice.

There is a choice on SOME models, SOME of the time. ie, 642 comes with or without, at least sometimes. Maybe.

Not enough to make the question or the answer anything other than meaningless.

Go to your local GS and just stand back and watch who is buying guns. Most buyers don't know about the IL. All they know is what counter sales person tells them. Even will all the members on this forums we represent a very small portion of the new gun buying market. Personally, I just had my first IL S&W revolver experience a few weeks ago. I had a co-worker who dropped his 629 in the sand on an ATV trail (it got buried and run over). He had it totally stripped down to be vibra tank cleaned and I reassembled it for him. Seeing how the IL works close up now, I know I'll never own one.

I have plenty of both, buying new IL S&W's does not bother me a bit.......I just got done shooting the used but like-new 10-14 I got for $350 OTD because "no one wants them locked S&W's" so I gladly bought it and with 130 gr. +P's it's a joy to shoot. Tell me where else to get a LNIB Model 10 of any flavor for $350, with or without a lock! Trust me, S&W sells plenty of IL revolvers.......they haven't made them for over 8 years and brought out new models for lack of selling any, in fact they add more to their "Classic" line all the time.

People turn their noses up at the 10-14, but they fall all over themselves to buy some holster thrashed Model 19 with 10,000+ rounds on it, pay $400 and then crow about the deal they got........

As I said, I have dozens of older S&W's, a lot of them I bought before the IL guns were even a thought back in 2001 or so, but I am happy with my 3 IL revolvers and would gladly buy them used all day long if dealers have MIM and IL 67's and 64's they need to unload for $300.

Sales guys use the IL as a feature and a reason to buy S&W guns.

I see it all the time - a couple comes into the shop, he wants the biggest, baddest Schlock his better half will stand for. Then he (and the sales guy) steers "The Little Lady" over to the revolvers. "Here's a simple gun for you to operate little girl". Where he's concerned with caliber, she's all worried about safety and sales guy shows her she can keep her own little gun locked with her own little key.

I don't care about the IL, I don't use mine and don't have an issue with them. The sales tactics however make me wanna vomit.

If I want it and can afford I buy it. The IL is not an issue to me.
