Default Mild load for 686 in .357 Mag

Hi folks,

I´m looking for an accurate and mild load
for my 686. I prefer a 180 gr Lead HP bullet.

Hi there, Im not an expert, but it would help a little if we know what you wanted to use it for and what barrel length gun you have? Every gun shoots different if you reload you might want to try different loads and see which one works for you. just a thought welcome aboard.

Accurate and mild just seems contradictory with a 180 grain bullet.
Now 148 grain wadcutters with a charge of Bullseye or 231 would be accurate and mild.

I think you would be better served with a 158SWC with 6 grains of unique. That would be both accurate and mild and shoot well in your 686.

+1 on that^^.

I like 5.5 gr. of Universal behind a 158 LSWC in my 4" 681. Chronographs at 1129 f/s.
My favorite for DA shooting and shoots to POA with this fixed sight revolver.

Well, it depends on what level of recoil he's used to. Accurate and mild usually go hand-in-hand, and there's no reason a 180gr can't be accurate. I'm guessing you guys are questioning whether a 180 can be mild. Well, again, it depends on what you're used to. I shoot a LOT of 44s, usually special-level loads, but I can shoot a light-loaded 180 in a 357 brass afterwards and would guarantee you it would feel "mild."

As far as the load goes, I really like W231, so I'd look for something around the 5.5grs area. I haven't looked it up, but that's what I shoot under a 160gr bullet, and it's far under maximum, so it should be fine for the 180.

I load 4.5gr. of Unique with a 158 gr. cast lead semiwadcutter. I've been loading them for so may years, I can't remember what they chrono at, but they are VERY mild from my 4" 686, and give me excellent accuracy.

I use 357 magnum cases, but it's a 38 Special load.

It punches holes in paper really nice, and there's no leading at all.

If you want a mild load for a 357, just look at 38 Special loads.

But, I don't know if you will find load data for a 180 gr. bullet in 38 Special.

If you really want to use the 180gr. bullet, you may need to work up the load yourself.

Good luck.

In my own experience using "180gr lead HP" in 357 mags for any purpose that includes the words "accurate" and "mild" is a contradiction of terms.
