Model 22-4 Thunder Ranch .45acp
Gentlemen, I will soon be driving across Michigan to pick up the subject pistol. As best as I can tell, this piece is still classified as an N-frame, square butt. Am I correct?
I ask as I will be ordering new custom grips for it and want to be sure. Thanks.

Yes, N Frame square butt that comes from the factory with the Altamont Magnas. These grips are small and for my medium size hand I use a Tyler T and it works fine.
If your glove size is larger than a 9 I recommend a larger grip.

Yes you are correct. It is an N frame with a square butt. I have owned three of these and still have one.

Well ... you've found the answer already. Yup - the TR is a square butt N frame.
22-4 SN# TR00xx
I find the grips a bit small, and was thinking about trying a Tyler T grip with it. Good to see that's working for someone.

I know I'm in the minority but would it be possible to modify the square butt to a round?

A set of Ahrends stocks improves the handling on these greatly.

It is possible to modify a square butt to round butt configuration but it is expensive and you will never recover the cost in a trade or out right sale. I say that after having several N-frames round-butted. The following examples are still in the safe.
Top picture is my 45 ACP Mountain Gun in blue steel, a version S&W never offered. Below that is a 27-2 that was re-built, round-butted then bead blasted and blued.

I have a model 21-4 that is a round butt and I wish it was a square butt. I never did like round butts but I guess that is what makes us individuals. Different strokes.
