442 w/nickel finish
I was at a local shop today to look at a pre-lock 640 no dash I 've been debating about buying. They had just got in a S&W 442 with a factory nickel finsh. It has the box and the old style cylinder latch. OTD it was $348. I put money down on it and will pick it up next wek. I've never seen or heard of this variant. I always wanted a 442. Anyway, does anyone know of a good solvent that won't hurt the nickel finish? I use Barnes Cp10 or CR10, whatever it's called. I wouldn't use it on this gun. Any ideas? And how rare is this model anyway? I'll post photos once I pick it up.

I bought one lightly used about a month ago for 400.00. I've been sticking with Breakfree CLP and having good results. The finish on mine is like a rock and barely shows any sign of cylinder drag. Good price, enjoy.

I got my 442 with a dull nickel finish in January 1994. It's a great gun for pocket carry. I've used Tri-flon for over 20 years on all my guns, blue, nickel and stainless. Tri-flow came later, but I never used that. If not for Tri-flon, I'd use Break Free.
That electroless nickel finish has held up great.
It replaced a 640 (38) due to weight and has been replaced most of the time by an even lighter 340 PD, loaded with Buffalo Bore 125 gr. 38 +P's. The 442 is loaded with Buffalo Bore Standard Pressure 158's and has Pachmayr Compacs on it.
I'd buy the one you're looking at in a heartbeat as I have to believe quality control was better when it was made than it is now.
Good luck.

I had one back in the '90s; wish I still did.
It was a great revolver.

[QUOTE=ladder13;135714221]Bought this one about 5 years ago, with box.
Looks great. Any idea where to find a new yoke screw for these? The previous owner buggered mine a little.

I thought current 442s were black and the 642 was the silver finish version; not true?

Current 442's are black. The satin nickle finish was from the early, mid nineties, 442 versions.
