Default Preference between Non Pinned 25-5 or a 25-7?

I am currently saving up for and shopping around for a Model 25 in .45 Colt.

I am wondering if those of you have that have owned or shot both, have a preference for either a non-pinned later model no lock 25-5 model with the ABC1234 serial number, the 25-9 included or a 25-7?

I am on the fence, between the 25-5's blued classic looks but the 25-7's 5" barrel is right between the 25-5's 6" and the MG's 4" barrel a good middle ground. I suppose the matte finish is a little easier to take care of and holds up better under use also.

Are they pretty much the same accuracy and reliability wise? From what I've read it looks like they both had MIM parts.

Yes, I know the true answer will be "Get Both" and eventually I will but, for this first purchase, are they pretty much same same or do you have a preference and why?

Thanks.

As I recall, the throats were tightened for the 25-7, and the bolt notches were lengthened for the 25-9. Someone correct me if I am wrong.

The throats were tightened with the start of the ABC1234 serial system on all 25's ( some were getting the tighened throat treatment as early as '80, but it was a very hit or miss thing).

I own both 25-5 and 25-7's and they both shoot the same, and there is very little difference across the chrono between (usaully in favor of the 5" gun by 15-25 fps) them when firing loads from the same box. The finish of the polished guns is easier to take care of than the blasted finish of the -7's. If you scratch it, it's scratched. It is a durable finish, but not quite as much as the polished IMHO.

If I had my wish, there'd be a polished 25-5, -7 or -9 with the 5" barrel and all the endurance upgrades with a fluted cylinder.

Probably from a shooting standpoint, the 25-9 in either the 5" non fluted version, or the 4", and 6" polished guns are the very best to own. They do have all the endurance up grades. The -7 has most of them, but not all.

I prefer 5" N frames over all others so for me it's an easy choice regardless of finish. On the other hand, there are far more polished blued guns around to find, so I wouldn't pass one of them up.

Thanks Gun 4 Fun! great info and really helpful.

I wish you had your wish as well. What you describe would be perfect. Both of your 25s are purdy! Is that factory wood on the -7?

Thanks for the compliment and the wishes.

No, those -7 grips were made by forum member "Kurac". they are Cocablolo

I just pm'd with him yesterday, and he is in the process of making more. he hasn't posted any for sale for quite a while, but he does make some awesome grips, and his prices are very reasonable and the fitment is superb!

Ziptar.
The guns are very similar. I would suggest that the differences are cosmetic. What ever you can find and afford would be the first one to get.

25-5 4 inch, owned this for a while. N serial number, tight throats. Shoots good.

25-7 5 inch, both much newer, both shoot well

I like the classic look and lines of the 4 inch 25-5 (ABC1234) serial number.
Shoots like a laser, great trigger. I do like this revolver

Ziptar.

You can always dress up a 25-7 and make them take a better pic. One of mine with some old grips from the grip bucket and a couple of pocket trinkets.

I think that no matter which one you find first you will be happy with the gun. Big frame with a big handle and it shoots big bullets.

My #25-5 .45 Colt has serial # N8442XX, giving it a DOB after 1980. It shoots as well as a neighbor's Mountain Gun.

Wow! Awesome posts! Thank You all, it may seem silly but it helps me out allot actually.

Problem is now that you've all posted pictures of your gorgeous Model 25s I am not content to just save for one. I've got a sudden urge to sell stuff too like tools, my daughters cat, the car, blood, a kidney .

Call it a coincidence but, a local shop just listed a 25-7 on it's website. I may go down to take a look at it but, they are asking $899.00 and they aren't known to be flexible on their prices, and I am just barely halfway there.

EDIT: I forgot to compliment RdrBill on his picture +25 style points for you. The Morgans are a nice touch. I've got a few of those myself and market being what it is and all lately its been temping to part with some to obtain a Model 25 but, even S&W want must have its limits.

We're missing a nickeled 25-5 in this thread, so here it is:

AND, we're also missing a 25-9 (longer cyl notches) in this thread, so....
