Bought a "new" 686 at Cabela's
Well, I'm an N frame guy, going back to when I bought my first .357 Magnum used in the late 60s. That being said, I really appreciate the L frames, and ordered a 586 the day that I found out about them. I have had that gun for many years. I also had a 6 inch 686 that I sold way back when because I didn't need two L frames! Live and learn.
I was on the lookout for a 686 for a friend and found a nice one for a reasonable price at a Cabela's in Allen Texas over July 4th weekend. Friend was unavailable, but this one was too nice to leave in the case, so I bought it. It has great carry up, both right and left handed,so it is really special! It came with the box, the package of tools, that was opened and had been used, and a sales receipt from 1986!
Cabela's lost it in the store and I had to call several times to get them going, but I finally got it about 10 days ago. Shot it and it shoots pretty good. Oh, yeah I did take some pictures.

However, I will acknowledge they are built to handle the .357 Magnum and do so without problems. I often think of buying one and reshaping the barrel shroud to the more "classic" S&W profile.
When S&W came out with the M-69 .44 Magnum "Combat Magnum" in 4.25" L-frame, partial shroud goodness I HAD to have one! And now I do, and it is truly a beautiful, well-sculpted gun with perfect symmetry!

That's interesting, as you see I am just the opposite. Some of my favorite revolvers are the 686/586, Colt Python, and Ruger GP100, and a lot of that is due to the fact that they are all full under-lug barrel revolvers.

I'll second this. A full lug is a good thing, especially when shooting .357 magnum, but also even when shooting just .38 Special. A full lug gives weight to the gun and allows for getting back on target more quickly. Plus, to be honest I think that it looks better.

Nice catch. FYI, if it is a no dash or a dash 1 it might need the recall done, (hammer nose bushing replaced). They still honor that recall and will send you a shipping label and fix it free. If you aren't aware, the hammer nose bushing hole was oversize (on some of the guns) and allowed a flow back of the primer into the bushing hole (when hot 125 gr loads were used), and it tended to tie the gun up. If the fix has been done there will be an "M" stamped on the frame inside the yoke area, by the Mod #.

Not me. . .full under lug is not my preference. I've got a big 629 Classic from the early 1990's that is so heavy, I'm thinking about mounting it on the hood of my truck.

I doubt they "lost it" and I bet that a sales clerk had "dibs" on it, but couldn't complete the transaction.
Either way, you got a sweet lookin' gal. Classic farm girl sexy.

Nicely done. N frames are incredible but L frames do fill a wonderful niche!

I also can't warm up to the full lug barrel. Now if it had a vented rib like the Holy Grail Python, that would make all the difference in the world.
Still can't believe I had 3 Pythons at one time and didn't pay over $375 a piece for them....sold all three for black rifles.
