So i just picked up one of the pro series 627s today. Is Christmas present so I can's shoot it yet BUT what sort of holster would work well. I have lots of moon clips on order and a moon clip loader coming from Dillon. I know is a big frame gun but I am a big boy and would like to carry hopefully in a IWB rig. Any recommendations? Do i want to remove the lock? Any videos on how to do that. What about moon clip holders? Haven't had a Smith in a while if I like this gun and I think i will will also get one of the custom shop 627s. Thanks in advance for the help.

I use a Blade Tech holster at the matches and an El Paso Saddlery Street Combat for concealed carry. I never use IWB carry for any of my handguns, no matter how big or small. Many shooters make their own moonclip holders for match use, and I have seen some very creative setups. For concealed carry I use the North Mountain single post holder which allows me to stack two loaded moonclips, and it works with everything from .45 ACP to .357 Magnum cartridge length. But I bought this holder from Mr. Perdue at a major match and I don't know if he still sells them. I think Dillon sells his super sized version for match use.

I have a Sourdough Pancake holster from Simply Rugged. It was made for my 4" 27 but my fully underlugged 4" 625JM fits it as well. So does my 6" 28 with about an inch of protrusion of the muzzle end of the barrel at the bottom of the holster (the bottom is open). I like it very much, it's a very simple, sturdy design that does not require retention straps. Simply Rugged sells a modification that allows the holster to be worn IWB, although I can't imagine stuffing anything so large as an N-frame down my pants!

This thread came at a great time, I'll sub it. I just purchased a 627 5" PC from another member here.

I heard they were going to make Rimz polymer moonclips for it, anyone hear an update on this? Wouldn't mind having moonclips that is easy to handle in the range.

Also, anyone else have experience with the limited speedloaders we have available for this gun? The 3 that I know of is the rubber one, aluminum $25 one, and another one thats selling for $50-60.

I ordered 2 8-shot units from 5-Star for my new 627. They are really nice and work perfectly, highly recommended.

I'll check these out, but plan on having the moon clips available as well. And I think a blade tech OWB is a nifty idea as well.

Thanks for the heads up. Just wish there were the push ones similar to the ones Safariland makes. The Comp IIs I had for my GP100 were the best speed loaders I've ever used.

Yup, same here. Have 2 speed loaders just for the heckovit and moonclips for practical use.

I've been practicing with my 5-stars today. If you insert the speedloader and twirl it, you see how little room there is to get the rounds into the cylinder, the cylinder release is the close point. It's going to take practice to become proficient at this. Moon clips might be faster.

Apparently these 5-Star loaders are the same product that was formerly called 3-D. I will have to buy one or two and try them.

I also have some of the rubber pull-off type loaders; the name escapes me at the moment. They are a poor choice when it comes to speed but are a viable alternative when you are not loading on the clock, such as the first eight in a series or a steel challenge type match. They are absolutely unfit for any type of defensive application.

The best moonclips I have seen are made by Hearthco specifically for Starline brass. They are thicker and do not bend as easily but work only with Starline brass. The thinner clips sold be Brownells work best with Federal and R-P brass.
