Default Ahrends grips ????

Wasn't quite sure where to post this, but this is as good a place as any.

Has anyone bought the "Ahrends" retro grips? They look like vintage Smith grips. I'm just looking for some honest opinions before I dish out the $$$.

Thanks

Thumbs up Retro Combats

I bought a set of Retro Combat grips last month for my model 66. They look very similar to the original S&W combat grips, but they fit my hand a lot better.

Hah!

Pretty much what skeezix said.

About a month ago I got a pair of retro targets for one of my 29s. Love the way they fit my hand. Same basic shape as the Smith targets, but just a bit thinner where I need them to be. I like the feel of the mat finish too.

Default Grips...

Two of these are Ahrends oil finished retro combats, the K frame model 19 in padauk wood and the N frame model 21-4 in bubinga wood. The third, L frame 686, are Ahrends tactical round to square butt conversion in oil finished walnut. All fit and feel great.

Model 19-4

Model 21-4

Model 686+

Bought two pairs from Brownells a few years back. I really like them on a M-18 or K-22. Large enough to reasonably fill the hand...yet not as big as the Factory Targets....exactly what Ahrends was trying to do.

Here's a Model 10-6 sporting a set of Ahrends Retro Combats in oil finished Moradillo. I was very pleased with the overall fit and finish. They also supplied exactly what I was hoping for when I requested a dark shade of grain in the wood. You won't be disappointed...

Here are two examples of Ahrends Grips…….Retro Target Grips on the 6" and Tactical Square Butt Finger Groove Grips on the 4”. Both are round to square butt conversions in Cocobolo with the oil finish.

I like them both. The Retro Targets are a bit smaller than the factory S&W Targets and they are very comfortable.

This is my 686 with Ahrends Tactical grips. They are perfect for me for either hand. I prefer no finger groves and the slightly smaller radius.

Default At the risk of hyjacking this thread...

Is there anyone out there who actually dislike some Ahrends grips? I know there are those who don't like finger groove grips and that isn't what I'm talking about. Are there any actual complains about them?

I've got 4 pairs of Ahrends tactical grips. Most of mine have the finger grooves and are the round to square conversion.
They all look great on the guns and feel great too.

The retro grips look good too. I just like the tactical with the finger gooves the best.

IMO, Ahrends is a first class operation and sell quality grips at a
good price.

Looking for some nice walnut, finger groove, round butt grips for a J-Frame 649 & 638, that will have a clear passage for speed loaders. Anything along the Ahrend lines ?

I like the smooth round butt to square grip conversions. I tried the finger grooved ones but they didn't fit my hand very well. These are oil finished Moradillo.

I got a pair of the convertible retro combats for my 617. I had a bit of a problem with the fit but Kim was very helpful, even though it was after working hours when I called. There is still a bit of overlap where the panels meet in the front, but all in all they are very well made.

After reading this thread yesterday, I went to their website and saw lots of neat grips for 1911s and for K, L & N frame Smiths, but nothing for a J-frame. Am I missing something, or just misreading the descriptions?

If you go to Ahrend's site if you click on Tactical or Retro, you will see it list the frame under the picture.

Here are some for the J-Frame at Top Gun Supply If you go to eBay, you can find some for sale by searching for "Ahrend grips J". Hope this helps.

Do I like Ahrends grips? I've ordered a set for every revolver in my collection. They're in my mailbox before the 3 day (Illinois) waiting period is up.

Retro grips have a round front, compared to the flat front on the new versions. The Retro Targets are about the most comfortable grip I've used. The flat front is better for indexing, e.g., for self defense. I have Retro Targets on a vintage K17 (.22 LR) with a 6" barrel.

Although they closely resemble the traditional S&W targets, Arhends have very little taper until the butt end. They share this property with all Ahrends grips, Retro and modern. This means they have less tendency to rise under recoil, and are less likely to need repositioning in off-hand shooting. Unlike the modern style, Retro grips are asymmetric, with a groove on the latch side to clear a quick loader, like the S&W versions.

They have no checkering, which displays the wood nicely. Mine are Coco Bolo, now protected, but the closest wood now is Moradillo. I prefer the oiled version to varnish, since it brings out the grain better.

Weeellll, since it was necro'ed by someone else, let's keep going.

Just got four sets of Ahrends; unfortunately two were round butt grips and I only have one round butt revolver. To top it off, the round butt grips were my favorite two of the four. Now I have to buy another gun

I prefer to order them unfinished and the finish them myself. I love the smell of tung oil.

Default I like Ahrends

Retro Banana Grips

25-2 Jovino

I have a blonde set of Retro Banana Grips on a 629-3 Carry Comp, but the photobucket debacle killed my photos.

These fit my hand better than any N frame grips I have ever tried.

Bought a set of combat grips for my 65 RB from the S & W store about 3 months ago. 75 bucks. When I received them guess what? They were marked Ahrends on the inside. Had logos too.

Sure wish they would come out with a different design for the J frames. Both that are offered now are too small and thin for me.

I've known Kim since he was making everything by hand in his basement, before he bought that first CNC machine and put it in the garage.

The guy is a perfectionist. He still touches everything that leaves his shop, and stands behind his work 100%.

I'm about to order a set of retro targets from him made of Iowa black walnut for a newly acquired 29-2.

You cannot go wrong with Kim Ahrends!

Ahrends makes a nice grip. So does Altamont if you like laminate.

I'm not a big fan of the laminate grips. When they get scratched, they're done. With a good wood set with a tung oil finish, I just sand out the scratch and slop some tung oil on it, then let is cure.

Usually the laminate material in grips and gun stocks is made by bonding the layers together using a Phenolic resin under pressure/heat to impregnate the wood.

I've found that scratches can be be sanded out and then the surfaced can be buffed back to it's original luster... you work with the stuff like an acrylic plastic.
