Smile Discussion for owners of S&W M&P R8

I am a new proud owner of the Smith and Wesson, Military and Police R8 357 MagnumŽ SKU: 170292
S&W link to the Revolver:
Product: Model M&P R8

I want info about it with other owners and discuss what you have learned / like about it.

I just shot it yesterday at the in-door range and LOVE it! I also have a M&P 9mm which is a joy to shoot but I think this is my all time favorite.

- What have you learned about using it?
- What do you like about it?
- Where are good places to gett accessories?
- Anyone add a light and a scope? How does that effect firing it?
- Best tips on cleaning it and care?
- Holsters that you like with it?

Thanks
TW

I will address your questions in order:

I love my R8, yet it has not taught me very much. I only shoot mine DA, even when I use it for bullseye shooting.

I enjoy the precision and accuracy of the revolver. I also like the barrel heavy balance of the R8, reminds me of PPC guns of years past.

You can get accessories anywhere you like, pick a shop or online retailer.

I have not put a light on it, yet I did put an eotech on mine. The eotech made it a quite a bit heavier and it did not have an impact on the accuracy or precision of my R8.

Tips on cleaning and care, shoot it more then you clean it. It is well built out of materials that do not corrode easily. No need to clean it after every range trip. I usually clean my every month or so and I go to the range once or twice a week.

The stock front sight is a bit problematic with any holster other than a speed rig. The front sight is easily removed without tools, which is a great feature. A ramp would be more suitable for a holster. I have a holster for mine, a simply rugged sourdough pancake and it is a fine piece of leather.

Default R8

I bought a used one about 2 years ago, and I really like it. I havn't fired it more that about 400 rounds, but it is very accurate and the grip fits my hand well. My only complaint would be that the double action pull seems a bit heavy for a PC gun. Other than that, I consider it one of the best revolvers I have ever owned.

Wow, thanks for the pictures. How do you like that sight? Also have you found a holster for it with the sight?

One more question: Does the sight add a lot of weight?

That eotech adds about 7 ounces to the total weight. I do not own a speed rig, so none of my holsters will work with that holo sight. The eotech is being used for bullseye. I do not carry my R8, yet I do have a simply rugged holster for it.

Default Aimpoint Micro H1

I put an aimpoint microH1 on top of my R8. Works very well - not as quick for target acquisition as the eotech, but still very easy to use. Only adds 3 Oz of weight.

By the way - I've been having some light primer strikes and FTFs with Remington UMC 38 specials. About 1 in 12 fails to go bang first time. Re-cocking and trying again normally does the job. Federal American Eagle is much better and I've never had a problem with 38 +P or 357 magnum ammo. Anyone else had this issue with light strikes? I may send the gun back to Smith, which would be annoying as I've had the for gun for only a month.

Default M&P R8 Light primer strikes

I realized that the strain screw was loose out of the factory and this should be fully tight. So I tightened the screw, which clearly added a lot of tension to the main spring and marginally increased the trigger pull tension but completely solved the FTF problem.

By the way - I attach a pic of a target I shot yesterday. The ruler is 6 inches. This was shot from 50 yards, resting on a sandbag. What a great gun this is!

I read and heard recently that a quick seating of the trigger tension screw with a little bit of locktite makes all misfires go away.

The trigger is not so great and needs work. S&W did a great job on my 625, so I'll just send it to them.

Speed loaders work better than moonclips. Loading the cylinder with moonclips was a bit more tricky. I use both the Thunder Ranch 8Shot loader and the 5 Star speed loader. I like the 5 Star loader a bit more because it's cut just like a cylinder and is easier/faster to line up.

I also use eight shot speed strips. I only load three pairs for faster loading.

Quote:
- What do you like about it?
It shoots great. The barrel magically absorbs the recoil. The white dot on the front sight makes shooting easier. I would like to get a set of night sights for it.

The eight shot capacity is fun.

This gun just needs a trigger job, night sights, lock plug, and better stocks.

Internet.

The Moonclip Tool
Simply Rugged Holsters
Blade-Tech Holsters
5 Star
Thunder Ranch
QuickStrip

I have not tried mine with a light.

Clean it like any other revolver.

I made my own. I will eventually buy a Simply Rugged holster for it.

Kydex IWB holster that I made for the M&P R8. It was actually quite difficult to mold. The rail is wider than the frame, so I had to get both the muzzle and forcing cone areas exactly right or it would not come out or go in properly.

Awesome. I'd been wanting a decent holster for my TRR8; I have a Blade-Tech, but it doesn't conceal well at all (holds it well, but reholstering isn't terribly smooth unless the lower rail is attached, but that isn't a problem for you M&P R8 folks). I'll have to get me one of those (actually, a couple, I have a M15 that needs one too).

As for the rest of the thread, mine came from the factory doing light strikes as well- I ended up sending it back (had some finish issues too). S&W had to back to me very quickly, I think it was under 2 weeks from when I sent it in to when I had it back. The problem was indeed the strain screw.

I have used a light on mine, but it's so far forward that it's hard to use. You don't want to go sticking fingers out past the front of the cylinder to activate it anyway.

I picked up a used R8 a year and a half or so back and I love this gun. It did have a loose barrel ring/nut and Smith took care of that without question. After my neighbor picked up a used TRR8 we became curious as to how many of these revolvers have been made. I called Smith and talked to a rep who told me that relatively few had been made and that they weren't currently in production. They key in on making what is selling. My impression is that production for both wouldn't be more than a couple hundred a year, if that.

Not only are the R8 and TRR8 outstanding revolvers, we are lucky just to have found one.

I picked a trr8 up about 2 weeks ago. Called a couple of gunshops that I do alot of business with. One guy said that he couldn't find either a trr8 or m/p r8. The other guy said finally called back 3 days later and said that he finally found one. He had checked with everyone that he knows from the mississippi river to the west coast and found one. But it would be a couple of days before he got it in and I would have to drive 4hrs over and 4hrs back to get it. At $3.50/gallon of gas it was going to cost me an extra $100.00. But I finally found one on my next call about 1 1/2hrs away for $50.00 more than ordering it. Only shot a couple 100 rounds through it and so far great gun. Optic just showed up today and going to try it this weekend.

Not completely pertanent because I don't own the M&P R8 at this point. However, I do have a model 620 which also uses a tensioned barrel. Normally it's equipped with a J Point reflex sight and because I've consistently seen cloverleafs show up when shooting at 35 yards I decided to take advantage of a closeout sale a local range was having on a Nikon Monarch 2 x 20 EER handgun scope. This is how it looked after a session last Saturday sighting it in and trying it out.

This is the target shot at 50 yards using American Eagle 130 gr. 38 spl. One thing I've noticed is that the tensioned barrel in my 620 isn't the least bit fussy about the ammo I'm using, it'll shoot great with anything I can find. I suspect those who really push for accuracy with the M&P R8 will come to the same conclusion. That is that tensioned barrels are a lot less load sensitive than one piece barrels.

Now a couple of notes. That group to the left spans 0.88 inch and is the result of the first 4 shots from a sandbag rest. If you look closely you can see that 3 of those hits can be covered by a quarter and that 4th might be labeled as a "flyer" by someone VERY obsessive. Unfortunately I didn't have the good sense to check the mounting clamps and I found that the rear clamp had shot loose during the session after I got home. I suspect that's the cause for the 2 shot group to the right. As for that one way to the right, I jerked the trigger and am actually surprized I hit the target.

Now for my conclusion and the reason why I posted in this thread. That is that these tensioned barrels CAN SHOOT. I'll also state that I wouldn't recomend a 2X scope to get the best results at 50 yards, that target was a lot smaller in the scope than I expected. Partly due to the fact that the Monarch is labeled a bit deceptively, actual magnification is only 1.75X. If you really want to explore the capability of the M&P R8, I would recomend a variable power handgun scope in the 2-4X range. However for only 150 bucks I'm not complaining, just trying to figure out if it's worth the effort of mounting it on my 617. As for the 620, it has had the J Point returned to it, it works well out to about 40 yards and is a whole lot lighter to carry and much easier to holster.

PS; Yeah that 50 yard group isn't perfectly centered. Truth be told I should have taken 2 boxes of ammo to the range to sight it in. That group was the last 7 rounds in the box.

I love my M&P R8 !
I bought an Alaska Man Gear chest holster for mine but Diamond D makes custom holster for the R8 as well. Both companies are located in Alaska and make handmade custom holsters if you're looking for a perfect fit.

Default Guide's choice

I have the Diamond D Guide's choice for mine. Love it. The front sight catches slightly but not a problem.

Also bought 5 star speed loaders. Awesome. But I also like the moon clips. They don't cause me problems.

Congrats on your new baby.

Hi all...Havent been on here in awhile, and Ive been looking all over the internet trying to decide on this gun...I see a lot of the replies on here are from years ago...So what is everyone's opinion on this gun, is it still good quality?...Most of the reviews I've seen are good, the only nit being the material the frame is made out of...

Thanks...

Not that Lou needs anybody to speak for him, but the "SPARC" in large letters on the side of the optic kind of give it away. Made by Vortex, but not sure if they still make that model.

Sorry Lou - couldn't resist responding to this necro-thread.

Adios,

Pizza Bob

It's a Vortex SparcII, 2moa .
And it's still on the gun. And I shot it yesterday.
It will never leave the gun. That's how good it is. A great optic. Quality. And a well defined red dot that doesn't need but just the one adjustment, that one would initially do.
Has a turn it on leave it on (24hr?) Shutdown. Which is great. Because I'm lazy. Turning it on is nice. Not having to turn it off is nice.
I still haven't replaced the battery! ! Discussion for owners of S&W M&P R8

Looks like I found them on the net cheaper than what I paid for them. They're still selling.

Shot my new R8 this weekend and absolutely love it. What a great shooter and accurate. Have yet to try any of the moon clips in it.

Yes it does. Drilled and tapped, with attachable rail included in the box.

Eight rounds of 357 magnum in one cylinder is fun to shoot! (and it looks cool resting on the desk)

I did not know there was an R8 non-PC.

Anyways, my M&P R8 is Performance Center. Such a joy to shoot.
And yes, it is still drilled and tapped with an attachable top rail, screws, and threaded plugs (if you are not using top rail like me at the moment) included in the box.

Raising this from the dead. I recently picked up very nice 327 R8 but unfortunately three of the four screws for the top rail were missing. Any idea as to a source? Numerichs shows nothing for this model.

If you call Smith and Wesson's Customer service, I'm positive they'll send em to you. I stripped one of those top rail screws and had to drill it out- they sent me a replacement. And the plug replacements when I lost those too.

Well I ended up emailing S&W CS Thursday late afternoon. I received a phone call less than 24 hours later from S&W asking for my preferred shipping address for the screws, no charge. I explained I bought the revolver used and the missing screws were not their fault but they said free anyway.

It is good to know their service has not apparently declined.

They have good customer service. I've had many positive interactions with them. Most are generally friendly and want to help us out.

I am glad to hear they came through.

In case anyone is interested, per S&W the screw dimensions are 8-36X3/16"
