If it's P&R'd, it's not a 686. Probably a 66-1. Joe

It's a very good price. These were made after the pinned and recessed revolver era, but the lack of these features do not affect them negatively in any way. Note there is no pin in the frame above where the barrel threads, and the chambers are flat and not counterbored for the cartridge heads, which are normal for this model. Enjoy!

A local shop has 4 M686s and they are priced from $449 to $599. 2 of them are $599. So yes I think you've found a good deal on a very good S&W. Grab it.

That is a very good price for that 686. It appears to have been fired very little, nor carried in a holster. Better snap it up!

I carried a 4" 686-1 many shifts as an armed security officer. Mine served me extremely well, one of my finest duty guns. That is a steal for one in good shape.

I just paid $599 for a 4" no dash. I would buy another at $379!
It wouldn't even make it into the case around here...

Great price. Bought mine in 1987...dumbest thing I ever did was sell it. If you don't buy, please list where it's being sold at.

It looks like a great deal. As others have pointed out, it's not pinned, not recessed, and those are Pachmayr grips.

Early 686 and 686-1s were subject to a recall. If yours was done, there would be an "M" stamped after the model number on the crane.

Here's a thread on that:

Early recall of Model 686 and 686-1

It's an excellent price on a 686.

Check to see if there is an "M" stamped on the inside of the crane area next to the model number.
The 686 (no dash) and the 686-1 had a recall on those models due to the cylinder binding on soft primer material; the primer would flow into the firing pin hole on firing and cause the gun to lock up. S&W replaced the firing pin, AKA the Hammer nose, and the firing pin bushing in the frame.

I just noticed the post before me actually gave you a link to this problem.

In any case, it's a great looking gun at a rarely seen price.
