Default Price of a Model 68-2

I'd like to ask for help. I may be selling a Model 68-2 (SN: AEU####) made in 1984.

Additional specs:

- Double-action only (possibly a weapon carried by an officer)
- Marked with "Los Angeles Police Department" on the right side of the barrel
- Marked "Smith & Wesson .38 S&W Special Ctg" on the left side
- Mechanical condition is excellent
- Cosmetic condition seems to be excellent with very few scuffs here and there (hopefully the photos help) - 95% or 98% perhaps?
- No box, paper, etc., just the revolver

I remember seeing one on GB - it was NIB with all papers, etc., and in SA/DA - and the reserve was not met at $1,100. I don't think it sold.

Can the more seasoned ones please give me a range of values on this one? I would like to get the most money as I just splurged lately, ouch! I also would like to keep this in CA.

Thanks very much!

I would have said $1,000 to $1,200 as a guess since I've never seen one sell. Your GB sighting makes me rethink that. Perhaps $1,500 to $1,800? Not worth it to me, but they are rare.

Here is a link to an auction that closed yesterday:

An example that was engraved with a specific officer's badge number went for a few hundred more recently. Hope this is helpful.

Thanks Goblin and murphydog!

murphydog: What is your take on that $901? Do you think that represents a fair market value? Or would that have been a steal?

I think the $900 example was about right, perhaps on the low side. If you look online carefully a similar gun is at $1250 and counting.

Thank you for the follow-up. I really appreciate it. I will take a look at that similar gun you mentioned.
