Default 627 / 327 Durability?

I know its a loaded question (pun intended) and depends on many factors, but I'm curious on any thoughts regarding the durability of both the 627 and 327's when used with a healthy diet of full power .357 loads.

I'm still trying to decide between a 4" 627 Pro Series and a 327 M&P R8 (just 'really' wish they made it with a 4" barrel).

Thanks in advance!

The durability of the shooter will be the question. i would imagine either would be quite durable.

I don't know about the R8 with its scandium frame, but the 627 Pro is over 2 1/2 lbs of stainless steel. Steel N-frame Smiths have been handling "full house" .44 Magnum and .41 Magnum loads for decades; one chambered in .357 Magnum will more than likely outlive its owner.

I have not been able to wear any of mine out yet. The 627 in the upper left hand corner is the 27th 8 shot production revolver manufactured and I have been shooting that one for more than 13 years now.

I NEVER put a round of 38 special ammunition in a 357 Magnum revolver.

My oldest 327 is only 6 years old. It is this cute snubby.

Though I have other 327s including one of the 5" JMs and a Night Guard. The thing about scandium is that it gets the weight of N-frames into the category of K-frames. The 5" 357s are still around 32 ounces. A 4" model 19 is 34 ounces. Should that 5" N-frame be made of steel it would weigh in around 44 ounces.

I probably have more magnums through my scandium 340PD pictured in this J-frame group photo than any of my 327s. I have had the 340PD since 2001. It is approaching 7000 full magnums. I am not too sure what your definition of "Healthy Diet" is, but that is quite a few magnums for such a little revolver.

I appreciate the responses y'all.

I found a good deal on a 627 so I think I'm gonna go check it out tomorrow - hopefully by this time tomorrow it'll be sitting here at the desk with me.

If you intend to shoot.....a lot, the steel gun will give you much longer use. Take some time and search the forums for Scandium to check out some interesting failures. That blast shield is up there above the forcing cone for a reason and it's NOT a user replacement part.
