Question TELL ME WHY A 27-5 IS SO VALUABLE

I was surfing through one of the auction sites and there is a 27-5 in the box, unfired possibly and there are 44 bids and it is up to $1630.00. Now what the heck am I missing here ? No provenance noted so I assume a run of the mill gun. Am I out in left field on this thing ?
Is money so plentiful all of a sudden ?

help one of the unwashed masses understand.
Thanks
Bob

I think that price is way overboard. The reason, I presume, is because there was a limited production run of 1,500 3 1/2" and 5" 27-5's, in 1991. The product code on the box, in that auction, is correct for this run. My book doesn't say exactly how many of the 1,500 were the 3 1/2" variety. Perhaps it was an extremely low number. Whatever the number, I would rather have an earlier (pinned/recessed) version. To each their own.

Someone wants it really badly; looks to be a 1991 only special production version, but not worth $1925 (+?) to me .

IMO the answer is a combination of condition and what was and is the Optimum barrel length for the Registered Magnum. Basically, you're looking at a brand new gun that's as close as you can get to the Registered Magnum in the ideal barrel length. Doesn't surprize me a bit it went that high, S&W could probablly get 1500 bucks each if they did a re-issue of this barrel length in the Classic line and retained all of the RM detailing.

Frankly, it just totally baffles me why S&W doesn't put a 3 1/2 inch 627 with the short lug RM barrel profile and a checkered top strap in their PC catalog. I know I'd drop everything to buy one and I'm certain that many many others would do the same. BTW, I have no interest at all in the current slab sided monstrosities.

Very interesting indeed... It IS nice! But for that price I could cross several guns off my wish list! I am sure whoever picked it up is a happy camper. Thanks for the link... I was having trouble finding it.

It's a phenomenal piece - about as nice as they come - but for the money I'd rather have two older examples in VG+ condition.

Default It's the pictures.

We have developed a theory about this particular type of Gun Broker auction.
With all the photographs ,by the time the browser/bidder scrolls down
past all the pictures he develops a FEELING or an emotional attachment
to the piece. This creates a bit of HYSTERIA and results in big bids.

The seller has a lot of positive feedback so the bidder has confidence.

MAY be factory fired only, would be a flag for me.
I would only pay this kind of money from the original purchaser
knowing the gun was new in the box.

Regards
Allen Frame

jeez, that ended up costing someone the same as one of those dime-a-dozen Pythons
beautiful piece. it's a shame that it will never be enjoyed at the range.

It's difficult to explain why things go the way they do in auctions sometimes. But it appears to be a case of someone (at least 2 of them) finding something, perhaps difficult to find in the desired condition, that they really want to add to their collection or have been dreaming of for a long time, and having the available funds to do so. Life is short and looking can take a long time for some things.

I'm perfectly happy with my 98% 8 3/8" Model 27-2 with no box that I bought several years ago for around $450. It gets to go to the range quite often ... enough to make it a really fun acquisition .

Scooter123 nailed it. This limited run in 1991 was the last chance for anyone to get a new 3.5" model 27 in the traditional style. It is a Holy Grail gun for many.

It's just the law of averages. Thousands of people visit the GB website. Given that, the fact that a couple of them fixate on a gun that they really, really want and bid like crazy against each other is simply a matter of probability.

There have been lots of other times when I saw a gun advertised at an extremely reasonable price go begging. That's just the law of averages working again. You can make the best offer to sell in the world, if your audience happens to consist of disinterested potential buyers, then your offer is meaningless.

Here is a 27-5 4" that I have been looking at, but alas my funds are a little short due to the Christmas rush! Looks nice!

The gunbroker gun has a pretty strong turn line on the cylinder for being possibly only factory fired.

If you are referring to the piece on Cabela's, be careful with the Rapid City store, have someone look at it in person. I had a bad experience with them relating to undisclosed damage (drop) to a K22 that never was resolved. They offered a refund (less shipping an FFL charges) and then ignored all subsequent correspondence. It all depends on the store you're dealing with IMO, had a good experience with the Hammond, IN store.

I guess when I get past the -2 guns my interest wanes and I certainly do not keep up with the limited runs as I remember the old commerative days when it seems there was a model of the month. Soooo, I suppose I am stuck in the past and refuse to move on. I suppose I have a bad habit of judging the more modern guns in light of what I can buy an older Smith for that seems more desireable in the market place. Butttt, then again the market place can be fickle. No question it was a complete package and a high quality condition gun, but I somehow can't keep from thinking that maybe some testosterone came into play or estrogen if the case be. Anyway I assume everyone is happy except for the losing bidder who was in contention till the last. And that my friends is what makes America great, item for sale, bidders with money and all the forces of a free society kick in. Win Win for all. Enjoyed all the comments and as always I learn something.

I always like seeing anything that I also own bring big bucks at auctions - it can make mine worth more, too.

That Joe*Deb shop has had a lot of very nice Smith & Wessons on GB lately - very well presented and photographed. Another guy with what seems like an unending supply of choice S&Ws on GB is Matt Fugate from Kentucky. I'm looking for a no-lock six-shot 4" full-underlug 17 or 617 and right now, he has three 617s on there but I can't justify his asking prices for a gun I will shoot. I bought one gun from him so far, a 6" 686-3 PowerPort that is as new as a used gun can be. In fact, my gunsmith swears it is unfired.

The person who won that Model 27 is probably very happy with his purchase and that's really all that matters.

Because I have a M27-5 in 5" that came with goodyear grips, I was interested in what the Morado grips (according to SCSW) look like. The seller states the gun has Cocobola grips on it. Are the grips shown Cocobola or Morado, or something else?

I agree with much of the above. True, it is the last opportunity to buy one in the original set-up, but for that kind of money, you could have bought an original example on which the -5 was based upon.

It is a nice looking gun, but for $2K+, I would rather have a minty and boxed 1950's 27.

I generally follow Joe*Deb auctions & they always have mint guns, sometimes NIB. I've yet to see any guns from them in average or even above average condition. And as pointed out, they present them well with many clear pics.
I think they have a pretty strong following & the final price on any particular auction reflects that.
You will need deep pockets if you try to win one of their guns, especially something in the class of this Model 27. I've found that's pretty much a given with them.
