The CCI 40gr HP is an ear splitter and a flame thrower from my 3" S&W 650. I would use the Winchester Dynapoint for now and try both the Hornady 45gr CD and the Speer Gold Dot when they are available

Don't mean to throw cold water, but I believe a 351 PD (exposed hammer) is a far better choice. Unless you live at the range, given the heavy 351 DAO trigger, it's much easer to learn to hit what you aim at if you use single action. And my 351 PD has never snagged in my pocket.

If you don't pocket carry, get any kind of minimal belt holster.

The most effective SD ammo is 40 gr. HP (CCI or Win Super X), or Win Supreme 34 gr. HP. The latter out-penetrates anything I have found, yet has just an insignificant few ft. lbs. less than the 40 gr. ammo.

The 351 makes a good "always" gun; it has a mystique all its own.

I think you will like your 351C. I have the similar 351PD and its a very light and handy shooter. I practice a lot with mine to stay sharp. Its so small and light and with fixed sights so it is not a target gun but up close within its intended range and purpose its an accurate little gun. Keep it in my pocket when fishing, walking outside at night, etc. and almost forget its there. I like either the CCI or Winchester 40 Gr. FMJ for the penetration. The new Hornady and Speer rounds sound interesting. Yes its loud and has quite a flash. Enjoy yours.

Is the 351C / 351PD trigger heavier than the .38/.357 trigger by necessity being a rimfire?

I don't think the APEX drop-in kit will work on these. Wondering what other trigger improvement options are...

I had a 351PD that was sent back twice for the internal lock failing and kicking up my gun. Sold that. Now considering the 43C.

I've had the 351c for several years. It has been 100% reliable with all ammo. I use Speer Gold Dots for carry.

That said, the trigger is super heavy. It is difficult to hold the 12-oz gun steady through the long heavy trigger pull. But with practice you will develop excellent technique which will transfer to all shooting platforms.

I like the sights on the 351c, they are easily seen and work well at close and medium distances.
