Default Smith and wesson "ratchet drive hub"

I have the smith and wesson m&p 38 bodyguard.
It has the "ratchet drive hub".
What are the advantages of this design?

The advantage is that without it, the cylinder would not rotate. All revolvers have this feature, in one form or another.
