Default Brand New Gun! S&W 627 Pro...Pictures and partial review

First time posting here...figured this would be a good place to post this

So i just received my Brand spanking new S&W 627 4 inch pro model and all i can say about it is wow. Went to the range a couple of days ago to see how this baby shoots and my first shot was dead center, with the other 7 shots forming an Inch group at 8 yards. Basically every hole was touching. The double action on it is seriously one of the best i have every felt, with that being said the only double actions i have felt are my p226 and my girlfriends fathers colt diamond back. when i was looking for a good revolver to get i was tied between the 686+ and the 627 and what set me over the edge was the fact that the 627 was cut for moon clips for only 100 dollars more, for anyone wondering i payed 755 before shipping.

I fired about 80 rounds of 38 special through it and they seriously felt like i was shooting a very high powered 22 if that's possible. As some people might say it shot like a pussycat. Next came the 357 which were an eye opener for me but felt so good coming out of the 42 oz frame. The gun really didn't flip in hand at all but rather pushed very sharply backwards when they went off. I feel like i could shoot the hardest 357 in it all day and not get tired unlike my lcp which after 50 rounds im ready to go home.

The only negative thing about it that i can tell which should get easier with break in is the cylinder release isn't the easiest thing to push forward and open the cylinder. I think its the retaining pin thing that's spring loaded that holds the ejector rod in place that's stiff.

But the single action on it is insane. when the trigger is where the hammer falls it literally doesn't move at all. I only wish that all guns could have such an amazing stock trigger

My next thing is going to be to get some sort of Holster for it which i need help deciding what i should go with, looking for an IWB call be crazy but i really want to carry this sucker. I posted something early about this and people suggested LOBO gun leather specifically the IWB style. Another Holster maker i found was tucker gun leather which they make "the secret" IWB holster. Both of these seem to not have mouth reinforcement which seems to be a good thing as this is an N frame so i don't want a lot of bulk. Last holster options would be to just put in an order for a Milt sparks "watch six" instead of the versa max 2 as the WS doesn't have the reinforcement stated before.

Please feel free to give me suggestion regarding the holsters as the would be greatly appreciated

Here are a few pictures of the Lovely beast

Another concern of mine is that when i was cleaning the gun i noticed that the crown of the barrel had some sort of i guess u would say burring. Do you thing this is something to be concerned and possibly tell S&W or do u think its fine

The 627 is a great gun. Now go to ICORE.COM and find a local club so you can shoot revolver matches with it. These matches are great. Everyone is shooting a revolver. The 8 shot gives you a chance to miss a little more.

I wouldn't worry about the crown. See how it looks after a box of ammo goes through it. But with the group you described you don't seem to be having any trouble.

Nice choice! I just got one a couple weeks ago myself. Lovin it so far.

That crown looks jacked up, but I agree, if its shooting good then I wouldnt mess with it. I attached a picture of mine below.

I also attached a pic of some of the accessories I've gotten so far since you were asking about holsters... the pancake is a DeSantis and the IWB is a Galco. I really like them both as far as being comfortable and functional for carry. I'm not crazy about the "looks" of the DeSantis just because its shaped for a full lug barrel and a six shot cylinder - I'm just picky like that.

I'm really diggin the 5 Star speedloaders and the DeSantis Second Six speedloader pouches, and if you dont already have a moonclip tool I highly recommend the one in the pic (mooncliptool.com).

I bought the gun specifically for CCW use and I think it will fill that role well. The only thing I've done to the gun itself so far is the new fixed sights, Hogue grips (which I had to reshape a bit and then refinish -- and I stippled the backstrap a bit just to give some traction to the heel of my hand), and then I changed out the cylinder release cuz I just didnt like the factory one.

Good luck!

Wow all your stuff looks really nice...now im gonna have to get all that also lol

Got a couple of questions for you regarding the speed loader and holder for it, IWB carry, and your moon clips

I have been looking at the 5 star speed loader and it really seems like it has great quality. But my concern was finding a holder for it, and you mentioned that you use the Second Six speed loader pouches. Does the speed loader fit good inside of it or is it a really tight fight?

Was wonder how comfortable it is for you to carry IWB. Im looking for the thinnest holster possible to mitigate the huge cylinder. Im 5'11" 165 lbs and i carry a Springfield EMP now so the length of the grip really isn't a problem just concerned about the thickness.

Also are you just using the stock s&w moon clips or did you get yours else where. I have WWB loaded in mine now and they are extremely loose, to the point that if you really don't take your time it really slows you down.

BTW thanks for the pictures really shows everything i need to get lol

Re: Second Six pouches -- I ordered the "29M" model and the 5 Star loaders fit perfectly. You'll see in the picture that there are two screws on the bottom edge of the pouch -- there are four holes, and you'll have to use the two bottom-most holes or they wont close. They're comfortable to carry, and dont leave as much to print in your clothing since half the loader sits behind your belt. The loaders themselves seem to be of very high quality (I've got two and I'll be ordering more). You can also just put a loaded moonclip in these pouches and they work fine -- rather than having a knob to grab (as on the speedloader), you just stick one finger down into the moonclip and lift it out. The spring-metal moonclip holder in the picture also works really well. I plan to make my own out of Kydex sometime soon and I'll put up pictures when I'm done with them.

Re: IWB carry -- the reason I went with the Galco holster is because its designed so that the bulk of the cylinder actually sits above your belt. That way you dont have the belt going over the top of the bulkiest part of the gun and holster. Its actually quite comfortable for me, and I'm even a smaller guy than you (5'11", 145).

Re: Moonclips -- I have the 3 S&W's that came with the gun, and I also ordered 8 additional of unknown brand when I got the moonclip tool. All of them are the same thickness. What causes some ammo to be loose and some not, isnt the clip, its the cartridge case. If you look at the gap in the recessed area just below the rim of the case, you'll see it varies from brand to brand. I've got Winchester, Hornady and Frontier cases that all fit tightly on the clips, and then I've got Double Tap, Remington and Federal cases that all fit quite loosely. I really like the moonclip tool I showed in the pic -- you can load and unload the clips all with the same tool.

Exclamation Mine Too!

I just picked up a new 627 Pro 4" I ordered from Davidsons today, and keeping this post in mind, the first thing I checked out was the barrel crown, and.... Mine is the same way.

Awesome revolver, but, I do not think any gun should have left the factory looking like that.

Standing at the gun shop with the new piece in my hand and I'm thinking... send it back, but then I'm thinking, the next one probably will look the same, everything else seemed fine, so I brought it home and already have a return label from S&W on its way. I know Davidsons has the guarantee and all, but like I said, the next one might look the same, so I figured take this one and deal with getting this one right.

I am not happy about that, but maybe they will give it the once over it should have had before it left their place.

Other than the way it looks, I do not believe it will affect the way it shoots.

What they did was, when they cut the target crown into the end of the barrel, the bit did not go 100% from the outer edge of the cut to the rifling in the barrel and that is what looks rough, the edge of the rifling is sticking out by a few .001". They stopped the cut just shy of touching the barrel inner diam. and the rifling is sticking through.

Now I'm debating whether to send it back or not. If I do and they look at it and send it back saying it is OK like that, which I hope they would not do...I'd be out the gun for a number of weeks for nothing.

Maybe I'll shoot it, and if it is the tack driver I think it will be, I just won't wipe out the barrel crown when I'm cleaning it. Leave it black and then I won't see it. I am kidding, but I'll shoot it first then see what I'm gonna do.

Also, aren't moon clips supposed to be in the case with the new gun, 'cause mine did not come with any.

Has anyone sent something back to S&W lately, if so how long did it take to get it back?

Thanks for readin'

Ss

I would be surprised if it took more than a couple weeks to get it back from S&W. Make sure you put a note in with it explaining your concerns so there's no questions. Look under the linner in your box and check your paperwork, there should be 3 moonclips is a small plastic bag in there somewhere.

Thumbs up Thanks

A couple weeks doesn't sound bad!

Yeah, I looked through everything and the clips aint there. I know that is not a $$ thing, but still, dang it! they should have been there.

I probably got a gun somebody else sent back to Davidsons when they saw the crown, but helped themselves to the moonclips.

I'm kiddin'. That couldn't happen. Could it?

Anything is possible, you should mention that the clips were missing when you send it in, they aren't that cheap.

Keep it - shoot it - it has a lifetime warranty - you can always return it to them (S&W). Call them re the missing clips - they'll send you some. Then - find Ranch Products current phone number - order some. They were 50/$50 or 100/$75 delivered - and they'll ship & bill you - or, at least, they did. They fit Remi & Starline brass most easily. There is also the 5starfirearms.com site for a nice 8-hole machined speedloader & loading baseplates. Good products. Both sources are top drawer to deal with. The Brownell's long nutdriver-style demooner made for the 627 holds 8 .357M empties - ~$15 - works great. Enjoy your 627!

Stainz

PS Ss... is there a name change in the offing?

I see that S&W doesn't sell it in a 6" barrel.

I recently sent in a 29-5 to have the cylinder reblued due to bluing wear caused by powder blowback from the holes drilled in the bottom of the top strap for scope mounting. The note with the shipping lable said average return time was 2 to 3 weeks. Long story short...it took 6 weeks. Communication from S&W was poor...no response to emails. You have to call them.

When I sent my 22-4 thunder ranch in to correct the low and left problem, they got it turned around in a week. YMMV.

I'm debating between the 627 pro, 627PC or 625PC.
Leaning towards the 627 pro, at least as far as reloading costs.

That's my next one. Has everything I want in a 4" .357.
Outstanding pistol, but I agree with those that said that crown needs attention.

Rolan,

Be careful with those cheeseburgers and milkshakes... carrying a few too many of those, as I do, makes such an IWB carry difficult!

Nice rig. I need an OWB version - a bit lower slung - for a 2 5/8" PC627 UDR. My 627 Pro is too much fun at the range!

Yes. I sent my 4" Pro back to S&W for the barrel crown and trigger drag and they repaired the crown, it is nice and clean and sharp now, and replaced the trigger and hammer.

Out and back under 2 weeks. They did a good job. It is terrific now.

I actually just sent mine out this past Monday (03/28) for crown work too. Mine was actually a bit rusty inside as well. Hope I get mine back soon with no further issues

I'm sure you will get it back in top shape. Mine has been great since I got it back.

I'm waiting on a set of Ahrends Tacticals for mine. I don't have rubber on any of my revolvers.

Mine arrived a week after my last post, perfect, no problems so far. Performs like a dream at the range. Very satisfied, is my favorite.

This is why I love this forum...while the rest of the concealed carry world frets over mere ounces and single stack plastic...The gunners on this forum are showing how they pack real steel, stuffed with 8 rounds of manstopping hollowpoints!

Default 627 holster

Any one know of a supplier of a holster for the S&W 627 with a scope mounted on top? I love the revolver and have put a couple hundred rounds through it so far. As opposed to the comments by one on this site the muzzle does raise when fired.

Bought the same about a year ago and really like it. Solid, steady and smooth. The bead blasted finish makes removing burnt powder from the cylinder front a bit tougher but for this gun I like the matte look better than shiny. Thinking about having the trigger and hammer done in gold nitrite.

Think I'm going to get that Galco IWB for my 22-4 and put the revolver to use.

Default Here's mine.

Funny that you should post this thread now. I just bought one of these this week and have been meaning to submit a post about it.
I love mine. Something about the balance. It is the only .357 magnum I own that I truly enjoy shooting with full power loads. There is just something about an N frame. I will say, however; that I was not aware that my gun is able to use moon clips until I read your post. I have been shooting mine without moon clips and it works just fine.

Here's a look at the crown on my gun:

It isn't cosmetically 'perfect', but the gun shoots well and it at least looks like it wasn't buggered. I consider this totally acceptable.
I can understand your concern about your crown. Even if it shoots well, you bought an expensive gun and cosmetics are important even if you can't point to a functional issue resulting from it. If it bugs you (it would bug me), I'd contact S&W and ask for them to fix it. You don't need to feel apologetic about it. They should send you a call tag and correct it at no cost to you. That's my opinion, and I'm stickin' to it!

I'll agree w/ some of the other posters re: the crown --- I say send it back.

And yet again this forum is likely going to prove to be detrimental to my wallet. Thanks for the post. Awesome looking gun!

I guess I never really checked the muzzle finish that good, so after this thread I took a closer look and sad to say I think the guy that finished it used a hammer and chissel after a liquid lunch . When will a poor crown finish affect the guns performance, what specifics should I look for at the crown? I'd try to determine how bad it might be by range shooting but I'm not the eagle eye I used to be.

Concerning the factory crowns, while not pretty IMO they really won't have a MEASUREABLE effect on accuracy. Stainless steel just rips up cutting edges and what you are seeing is a typical result of using high speed steel cutting tools. S&W could go to high dollar ceramics and flood cool the operation but I'm certain they've concluded the additional cost doesn't yield anything more than improved visual results. Specifically, the gun won't shoot any more accurately and they are in the business of building guns, not Art Work.

If you don't like the way that chamfer looks there is a simple fix. That is to clamp the barrel in a vise and spend a couple of hours lapping it by hand. It's what I did to my 625. Didn't improve the accuracy at all but it is a bit prettier.

I know it's a year old, but I'm curious where you bought it for $755.

The 627 Pro has a two piece barrel!? I never realized that until I saw these pics of the muzzle. My 627-5 has a one piece barrel and I just assumed they were all like mine.

My -5 has a round barrel and it actually fits in the Kramer horsehide holster that was made for the Mountain Guns. I was going to suggest this holster for you Pro owners but after looking closely at your tapered lug I don't think it will work.

Regarding grips, mine is comfortable with JM grips and full power .357 Magnum loads. Getting mine all outfitted was very inexpensive. Another shooter hated his JM grips so much that he gave them to me for free. And another shooter had sold his Mountain Gun and was selling his already broken in Kramer holster for $20. I was delighted to find that whatever he did to break in that holster, it now fits my -5 perfectly.

Pretty sure that is a one piece barrel. Theway the muzzle / crown is shaped just makes it look like a two piece.

From S&W website description:
"Custom Barrel with Recessed Precision Crown"

So I guess that's their opinion of precision?

Nice thread and revolver. The holster recommendation is also great.

Received mine a few days ago and it did come with 3 moon-clips and the recessed crown is nice and clean.

The gun is so well designed and balanced, when I shot a box of 38sp cartridges, it almost felt like a heavy 22LR. I'm impressed.
Will proceed to 357 mag soon.

The trigger action is exceptionally smooth. Both trigger and hammer are forged.

Look at your 4" 627 Pro - is it's trigger hollow-backed, a la the very first post in the thread? If so, it is a MIM part - not a forged trigger. The hammer is likely the same as the trigger. The 627 Pro is less expensive than a 4" PC627 - which would have both a forged hammer and trigger. As far as I know, all 627 Pros came with MIM parts.

As far as I know, MIM parts are not dark ugly burnt color. MIM parts are clean and pretty looking because they are poured, like cast lead bullets.

Do you have any references that talks more about the 627 Pro having all MIM parts?

Wow, I'm impressed. A lean, trim person who can wear clothes that fit and still carry a serious revolver and not print. Not easy to do but you have done a great job with it. Don

Re the original topic. Nice revolver, 8 shots in the cylinder and a moon clip, with practice, you give up little to a semi auto in terms of firepower and with full snort .357, impressive downrange performance. Don

Default Are you still loving the gun?

Dumb question I know. I have the 325 PD, a 29 Bounty Hunter and a 629 backpacker. I would LOVE to shoot the N frame but with cheaper ammo! (as if any ammo exists.) I do have a few K frames, but I just can't stop thinking about those N's!! Thought about the classic, but I want a Round Butt.

Good luck guys!
