The last two PC guns (627 & 625) I bought came in gray plastic cases.
I wonder how Smith determines what guns get the Alum. cases?

To the best of my knowledge, none of them get the aluminum case any more. The gray plastic case is it.

I have to V-Comps that were PC guns made for RSR that came in a similar case except the logo is encircled with "PerformanceCenter".

A Perfomance Center firearm's packaging is determined by the Distributor or Organization that initally commissioned that run of firearms.

Smith & Wesson itself used to ship their Performance Center guns in aluminum cases. Now they ship them in gray plastic Performance Center-marked cases. This is a separate issue from what individual distributors determine to do today.

I called s&w regarding this issue last month and they said they no longer ship any guns in the aluminum cases one reason being that they had issues with the guns getting locked in the case and not opening.

It's easy to figure out an unknown combination, I've done it several times myself.
000, 001, 002, 003................
It's always the last number I try!
