Default Model 624 Recall

Hi, I am new to this forum and have a question.

I purchased a S&W .44 spcl Model 624 new in the box in 1988.

I was just doing some Googling on this model and read that there had been a recall (don't know when) on this gun at some point, but I never heard anything about it.

Does anyone have any knowledge of this?

When I swing the cylinder out I see these letters and numbers #AHC2073

Thanks!....Mike

Some of these were 'fixed' before they left the distributors. Look for a 'C' within a red circle on the white label that has the particulars of the gun written such as S/N. bbl length etc.
If the red 'C'' is there you're good to go.

If not you'll have to contact S&W about a return.

Hello mike, welcome to the forum. I believe that the recall was due to some material defects with the cylinders on M624's. There have been a couple that apparently had either the wrong heat treatment or wrong alloy composition. I've not heard that there were any in-service failures and I believe that this was a factory discovered error. The recall involved shipping the customer guns back to the factory for (I believe) a hardness check on the cylinders. If OK, the guns were returned with a red "C" stamped on the boxes. Otherwise, I believe that the cylinders were replaced for a while, or the guns were exchanged for M629's. If you've got one that hasn't been re-inspected by the factory, I'd give them a call to see what they'll do for you. However, be aware that if you send it to them and they cannot replace the cylinder, they will not likely send it back to you.

Call S&W and give them the serial number.

When you call customer service ask for Kate Fredette. She's the goto person on the 624 recall. Others that answer the phone sometimes know nothing about it.

I recently picked up a 4" 624 that falls into the serial number range for the recall. Unfortunately mine doesn't have the box. I've been digging back through the old threads on this, and I guess I'll be contacting S&W. Anyone have Kate Fredette's email?

What I can't seem to understand is why they wouldn't have put a mark of some kind on the guns themselves, like they do with the 686 recall. Has there ever been a reason given for not marking them when they were returned to be checked?

When I contemplated a purchase of a S&W 624 I called S&W customer service withthe serial number to see if it was involved in the recall.

Just for grins I dug out the boxes for my 3 624's and they all
have the red C. As well I discovered my 6" 629 from that era
ALSO has a red C on the box. It's a 629-1 #AFP4692.
Any one know why this would have been recalled as well?

Last time I emailed her was four years ago, but this was her email address at the time:

[email protected]

She takes the serial number of a 624 and looks up the shipping date to determine if it falls within the time period of the recall.

(Happy to say my 6 1/2-inch 624 is okay. )

The suspect steel was reportedly used in both the 624 and 629 cylinders made within a short period of time.
