Default Difference between 14-3 and 14-4?????

I just saw a buddies 14-4, no revolver has ever felt that good in my hand.
The wood hogue grips fit very well in my hand, that made it even better. He says the 14-4 is the best of the 14's. I may get a deal on a 14-3, but I'd like to know the difference between them before I go too far.
What is the difference between the -4 and the -3???
THANKS!!!!!

Relocation of the gas ring from yoke to cylinder. The 14-4 should feel exactly the same as the -3.

In 1977 S&W changed the gas ring from being on the yoke to being in the front of the cylinder. That is the only real difference, well that and -4's made ofter 1982 were no longer pinned.

What a crazy deal, just an hour after I made plans to meet a guy to buy a 14-3, I get a call from another guy that saw my post about a 14-4. The deal was too good to pass up. So I now have one of each. Here's the difference in the gas ring.....
