I got another one since my last post, and a fine one it is, too. Model 25-7, model of 1989. Shootin' sonofagun, too.

What do you think about this one.
O.K., not in it's original condition but not pinned and the serial number starts with BAR followed by four digits.
According to the gunsmith who sells this gun the chamber throats measure .452".

After the engineering change of pinned barrels with the 25-5, smith and wesson cured the inaccuracies of the 25-5 by reducing the chamber throats since the 45 colt ammo was mainly 452-453 not the 454-455 of old. the reduced throats occurred during the time frame when the change was made so the 25-5 can be a great gun for shooting. Your particular example is very desirable because the Nil grips are worth US $200-250 and the rugged rear sight would go for $75-100 here. There are plenty of the old oversize chamber throats in the 25-5 so measuring is the only true determination.
Great find- enjoy it!!!

I'm still thinking about to buy it or not. And if not to wait for it's little brother with a 4-inch bbl. or to take the offer from the gun shop in Hamburg, a M 25-9.
I think I have to toss a coin.

My 25-5 with a serial number beginning with AUC has .452 throats. Mine holds tight groups.

I have two S&Ws in 45 Colt, a 625-6 with custom patridge front sight and a 25-7. I also have two Ruger Bisleys and a Uberti in 45 Colt. My loads are a 255g RNFP lead bullet over 8.5g of Unique and the 250g Ranier copper washed FP bullet over 9.0g of Unique.
I find the S&Ws in this caliber to be hard on the web of my hand, and I tend to get a blister there which forces me to stop shooting until it heals. I learned to tape my hand before going to the range if I planned to shoot them. But lately I have found a different way to hold these guns that is easier on my hand. With the Bisleys and the SAA, I shoot the same loads with no issues. All of these guns shoot these loads very well.

Have you tried decellerator grips by Pachmayr or the soft finger groove hogues? If not what kind of wood grips are you using??. 44 Magnum rifle loads will NOT blister a shooter with
hogue grips

Haris1, Wood or Hogue rubber, it makes no difference. I usually grip a revolver in my right hand with the web of my hand spanning the backstrap. These guns just beat the hell out of my hand when I hold them that way.
My new hold uses the thumb of my left hand to block the other thumb, pulling the web of my right hand away from the backstrap. It works and I can shoot well that way.
When I shoot less powerful calibers such as 38 spl or 45 ACP I do not nave an issue. But 357 magnum full power loads have the same effect as 45 Colt.
I should add that I am 65 years old, and due to the meds I take my skin is thinner than it once was. I believe this is a contributing factor.
My current grips are Ahrends finger grooved.

M25-13, Rocky Mountain Ram, 45 Colt
Guess I'll post my "newest addition" to this thread. Haven't got to the range with it yet but dimensionally everything looks right on & showing very little use.
The SCSW says the serial numbers for this run of 300 started at CTA21xx but mine's CTA14xx.
I'm really fond of these 5" barrels.

Liking the gage pin set backdrop, BLUEDOT37.
Have been shooting this recently purchased 625PP in IHMSA's "Practical Hunter" class. (The Power Port isn't allowed in Field Pistol.) Has been one of my most successful revolvers to date. (In one match I got three or four of my turkeys in the leg, which, while a low hit, was still astounding to me and my spotter.:
(The next match I decided to go prone for turkeys, as opposed to standing and went from 8 to two 75yd birds...So much for getting "fancy".)
One of the best fit and satisfying S&Ws I've ever had except for the uniformly "short timing". Have to manually finish rotating the cylinder every shot!
Pre-filthy:

Allen, help me out. I am in the process of buying part of a huge S & w collection; all NIB. There is a model 25 with a 3 inch barrel with grips just like the model 24-3. Only difference is caliber. They are asking $700 for this gun; NIB. A good deal or pass?

WOW, WHAT AN ENJOYABLE AND INFORMATIVE THREAD ! ! ! YOU HAVE A FANTASTIC COLLECTION, ALLEN FRAME. EVERY SINGLE ONE OF THE REVOLVERS PICTURED IN THE THREAD, FROM ALL OF THE CONTRIBUTORS, ARE JUST GORGEOUS. I HAVE BUT ONE 625, IN .45 COLT. IT'S A MOUNTAIN GUN, THAT FOLLOWED ME HOME FROM FLORIDA IN 1995. I PURCHASED IT USED FROM A SARASOTA LEO, WORKING PART TIME IN A LGS. IT'S A GREAT SHOOTER--VERY ACCURATE WITH A VERY NICE TRIGGER. I LOVE THE .45 COLT CARTRIDGE. I DON'T HANDLOAD, BUT FACTORY AMMO IS AVAILABLE IN A VARIETY OF LOADS, FOR DIFFERENT PURPOSES. I REGULARLY SHOOT 240 GR. LSWC, AT MODERATE VELOCITY, RELOADED AND SOLD AT MY LGS. VERY PLEASANT TO SHOOT, AND CUTS TIGHT GROUPS. THEY COST ABOUT 1/2 OF FACTORY AMMO, WITH AN EXCHANGE OF EMPTY BRASS. HERE'S MY MOUNTAIN GUN. IT WEARS AHRENDS SMOOTH TACTICAL CONVERSION GRIPS IN OIL FINISHED MORADILLO WOOD…...

a 25 3 inch sounds like is a "lock" model like a 25-14. They were square butts and 3 inchers made 2007 approx and are nice but a lock just the same. get the dash number or the product code. 700 for any boxed 3 incher N frame NIB is worth it, lock or not.

No.
All model 625-5 were 5 in guns and were marked
625 CLASSIC & 45 COLT CTG. on the barrel.

So, I'll add to this old post! I really enjoy shooting my 625JM. Was looking for a 44 Special, or Magnum as an addition. April gun show, came across 25-15. VERY nice box etc. Seller always has nice Smiths, and generally the best table selection. It is accurate at 25 yds. A bit more recoil than I expected. It won't ever replace my JM, but am glad it is mine! I do have a nice set of earlier target grips to add to it. Bob

Added all new photos of the complete collection to my original post.
As if it wasn't before, this has become the central focus of my collecting.
Good luck with yours,

I have read through this entire post and did not see anything that clarified where a 25-9 model 1989 fits into the picture. Any insight would be appreciated.

I have recently switched to Pachmayr Decellerators and like you said I no longer have any problems with hand injury. Thanks for the tip!

I was under the impression that 25-9s had unfluted cylindersl like the 25-7s, guess I leaned something today.

Yes, I was following that. I planned on placing a bid towards the end, but abandoned that plan when it rose to $1475. It hit $2800 in the last few minutes.
I already have a 25-7, which is basically the same gun in black.
The 25-5 is more cool looking, but not $2800 worth of cool.

Yeah, that was me. Still haven't fire it yet. It might have cost too much, but I wanted one. Being in Canada, a total of $4600 by the time I got it here.
Put some beautiful Culina grips with roper checkering on it. I know, have to learn how to put pics on here.

Good for you. Mine's not NIB and I do shoot it but your piece (at least to me) represents the standard of big bore S&W excellence. That is truly one fine revolver. Congratulations.

45 Colt Ctg
Bought in December 2016. Smith & Wesson Model 625-6 (circa 1996)
Mountain Gun, 45 Colt, Hand Ejector 6 shot Revolver, Stainless Steel,
no Lock, 4" Bbl, with useless for shooting wood combat grips.
Sorry S&W Enthusiasts no pretty pictures, I use my S&W's.
Shot weekly sometimes more, with my other Revolvers.
All handled carefully. Only cleaned when I feel like it,
as it should be.
Useless wood grips. Replaced after the first 6 rounds.
Quickly replaced with these for control and comfort. 100 plus
rounds put through the Revolver now. Very pleased with this Revolver.
The 45 Colt is impressive to shoot in the 4" barrel.
The 4" Bbl is very unforgiving on target, nerve and steadiness
is a must. I usually practice at 50 feet and beyond.

I totally agree . Those wood combats are poorly designed and are worthless for shooting magnums . Only good for looks .

Put some beautiful Culina grips with roper checkering on it. I know, have to learn how to put pics on here.

Looks to me as if your problem was the round butt grip which you changed to square butt? IMHO, one of S&Ws major screw ups.

Ha, don't tempt me, is it number 244? You could probably put it GB and get the same or close to.
I know it was a pretty good pile of money. The better half put a limit on how many handguns I could own. I had recently sold my Chevelle and she didn't say I couldn't get silly about what it would cost.

Allen-frame, I'm sorry but, I didn't see exactly who did your engraving in any of your threads, a link to them may also be helpful, please?

I just checked my SOLD sheet and I have previously owned two 25-5s in 45 Colt, and two 625-7 Mountain Guns in 45 Colt, all of which had PC action jobs. I've also previously owned two 38/44s converted by Bowen to 45 Colt as well as a switch cylinder Model 58 in both 45 Colt and 45 S&W (Schofield). I currently own a 625-5 5" in 45 Colt and several Bowen customized Model 58s in 45 Colt. I continue to experiment with another Model 58 converted into a 45 S&W (Schofield), also by Bowen. The 45 S&W is a far better cartridge for an N frame but commercial ammo is limited to Cowboy Action type loads. It's a handloader's dream however in terms of its accuracy, performance and efficiency.
The Model 58 pictured below has a S&W Model of 1955 45 caliber barrel cut to 4", with the crown and rib milled and shaped to look identical to the original factory 58 barrel. The front sight has an improved profile and the barrel/cylinder gap is a tight .004". The barrel's bore is .4515" and the chamber throats have been cut to .453". The gun has a complete action job, times early and consistently and locks up solid at hammer release on each chamber. The front of the cylinder has Bowen's signature "Black Powder" chamfer, and he also installed an internal trigger stop, a carefully fit hardened pin set inside the rebound spring. The sights have been regulated to shoot a standard 45 Colt RNFP load 1" above point of aim at 25 yards. During the regulation process 1.5" groups were routine (hand held from a bench). The grips are checkered Spegel Extended Boot grips, custom fit to the gun.

I've added a couple of 25-5s to the stable since the original post.
This pinned 25-5 has a new cylinder from S&W, and wears a black pinned in front sight and matching black rear blade.
This unpinned 25-5 is currently at S&W being evaluated for either/both a new crane or a new cylinder. Should find out soon.
