Default 29-5 With adjustable front sight.

I have one and am looking for information.
It has a blued 6inch barrel and a full under-lug with an non-fluted cylinder and adjustable front sight.
I know Smith made a Classic Hunter with the 4 position adjustable front sight and a non-fluted cylinder but all I have read that those models were 29-3s
This one is most definitely a 29-5.

Any information is most appreciated.

That would be the one. Mine has a Hogue grip on it but everything else looks identical.
Yes I'm interested in the product code and any other information you may have.
Any idea what market they were going after with that one? 6in seems a bit short for a silhouette revolver.

I think the front sight was to be adjisted for 7, 15, 25 and 50 yards in PPC compition shooting. The first one I remember was on a 10" 29.

A lot of those special runs that S&W made during that time period for different distributors overlap Model variations. The factory scope mounts, the Classic 29's, the Classic Hunters, etc. Some of the specials were done in multiple runs in significantly different serial number ranges. Need variant on collecting if you get into that kind of thing.

Any tricks to adjusting the sights on one of these? It looks pretty straight forward but I'd like to hear from someone who has done it.

Adjusting the front sight is pretty straight forward. I can't seem to find the original instr. sheet, but basically you adjust the rear sight to about mid point, then adjust the Position 1 for the closest distance you wish to shoot, then position 2, 3, & 4 for the other distances. Depending on the load used, you may need to tweak the rear sight adjustment. I don't shoot PPC or silhouette anymore, but set the sights to different loads I use. Mine is the 29-3 and came with the factory Hogue grips.

It looked straight forward to me but thought I'd double check before I start turning the allen screws to adjust the front.
I'm thinking those adjustments set for 25,50,75, and 100yards would be a slick set up for a hunting revolver.

H Richard is right on all counts. I would add that the allen wrench, if you don't have one already, is a .050; of course I didn't have one so had to buy a set with that one in it. Oh, well.

The rear sight on my 29-3 was bottomed out when I got it and none of the pins on the front sight had been moved. I put the rear sight at about the height of my other revolvers and set #1 pin so that the base of the sight was level with the wings of the mount, if that makes sense. This put my 240 grain loads at about 2" high on paper at 25 yards and pretty much right on dirt clods at 60 yards. I am going to try some 200 grainers before long, so may pick another pin to work with.

At first I wasn't too sure about this arrangement, but like you I have come to appreciate it. Something that may take a little longer to get used to is that narrow rear sight notch.

I love mine . . . yet another 29-5 w/smooth cylinder and 4-way adjustable front sight.

I currently have the front sight removed and safely stored, to quiet the draw from the holster in the field. This revolver has a holosight mounted on it and have been used as my main deer gun for the past ten + years or so now. It is a tackdriver, and I love the look of these "fine twenty-nines!"

Does anybody have the product code for the four-point front sighted 29-5. European Arms made a 629-3 of that ilk so presumably it must be their blue counterpart.

The front sight can be adjusted for 50, 100, 150, and 200 yard metallic silouette shooting. Hitting that ram at 200 yards the first time was amazing. Fifteen years latter, hitting 4 out of 10 rams in one match was unbeliveable for me. I guess practice is cheating.

Bill,

That's the code for the Hunter Reintroduction from 1991 with fixed front sights. The -5 four position fronts stainless equivalent is the European Arms ordered 103596. Jerry states that it is the same as the 29-3 Lew Horton Model, which would make sense as it's identical in features if one forgets the two updates it went through.

I will pull out mine and double check everything just to confirm. The gun is somewhat unusual in that it was sold as a new revolver but the box is factory stamped as "used". The product code is written in pen not printed as usual. Perhaps it was upgraded from a 29-3 to a 29-5 before it was every left the factory and first sent to my FFL dealer years ago? I will photograph the box label.

Jerry
