586 L-Comp (sku 170317)
Hi,
Did SW ever make a 586 L comp with a 6rd cylinder? I found one for sale. I think. If so, is it worth more or less than a 7 rounder. Thanks
Edit: Contacted S&W, sku 170317 gun from early 2008. I was told gun was distributed by Camfour. Not cut for moon clips. I have emailed Camfour to find further info.
Edit 2: I was emailed by Camfour again saying that since 2000 they have distributed only 881 7 rounder sku 170170, they never distributed the 170317. That's a pretty rare piece.

I do not think I have ever seen a 6 shot L-Comp. Mine is a 7 shot and cut for moon-clips. Value is probably the same. Some folks would frown at the IL on a self-defense revolver.
Regardless, very nice looking piece.

Thanks, I personally have no problems with the IL, especially with the heavier all steel guns.

The original 585-5 L-comp was a 7-shot. It was the first blue 7-shot revolver S&W did. Still the most desireable of the L-comps.
The similarly configured 4" GIGN, L-comp looking revolvers were 6-shot.
There was a small run of 3" ported barrel, 6-shot, 586-7 L-comps with 6 shot unfluted cylinders from the PC. These did not have the lock. There is a thread on them here.
The first reissue of the 586 L-comp - with that lock - were 7-shots. 586-7 IIRC.
I've never seen a 6 shot 586 L-comp with the lock. The lock guns I've seen all being 7-shot.
I couldn't tell you anything beyond that about current L-comps as I don't bother with the lock guns. Hope this helps. Regards 18DAI.

Don't remember the SKU offhand, but I sold several of the 6-shot 585 L-Comps. The word I got was they ran some for other distributors since the 7-shot was a Camfour exclusive.

The L-comp, product code 170170, was a distributor exclusive that Camfour began offering back in 2000. The product code was changed to 170248 in 2004 but I am not sure why.
Should a different distibutor want to offer that revolver it would have to be slightly different so as not to interfere with the exclusive status that the Distibutor who originally commisioned the firearm enjoys.
This is why you will sometimes see what appear to be identical revolvers but one has a fluted cylinder and one has an unfluted cylinder.

Do most of you feel it's worth less than the 7 rd versions?

I get it! Honestly, in terms of purchase price though?

Nah. I'm sure they're worth a least as much as the 7 shooters, maybe a bit of a premium since they're kind of an oddball. My L-Comp is a 7 shot with the IL but it's a helluva gun - accurate, great action - if anything ever happened to mine I wouldn't hesitate to buy another, 6 or 7 shots.

Edit: I decided to hold off and go with a NIB 170170 if I go the .357 L Frame route. They are still being distributed through Camfour. Thanks

I have had my Performance Center 586 L Comp for about a year. It has a DA trigger pull of 7 1/2 lbs and SA trigger pull of 3 lbs right out of the box. I have owned a lot of revolvers over the years and never had one with an action as nice as this one, including 3 Colt Pythons and many S & W's.
Also with the weight of the revolver and the comp the recoil of full power is minimal and rapid follow up shots very managable.
I am inclined to agree with others on the finish. Mine hasn't worn being carried quite often but you would think for a Performance Center gun it would be a little nicer.
One other thing I didn't care for is the tiny tritium front sight which is hardly visible in low light. I changed it out to a low profile fiber optic which I like much better. Still a fantastic revolver.
