Default Questions on 627??

Hi, new member here with some questions.

How good is the current 627 8 shot revolver?

I am looking at getting a 4-1/8" standard model.

Buy one - I don't think you'll regret it.

If you are serious about getting one, I'd strongly suggest you get into reloading if you don't already - they can be very addicting! You can go through a lot of ammo in a big hurry with 8 rounds available everytime you load one up. Even with full power 357s loaded, I found the steel framed 627 easy to hang on to. Shooting 38s in one is almost like shooting 22s.

While I personally carry some version of the 1911 for CCW, I had a 627 Pro which I unfortunately had to sell to buy my current N frame 357 Magnum - a 327 TRR8. If I ever learn to shoot it properly double action, the TRR8 will become my nightstand gun with the appropriate accessories - red dot sight, weapons light, laser, GPS guided munitions (OOPS - sorry, wrong weapons system). Single action, the bullet goes exactly where the sights are aligned when the trigger is pressed in one of the big 627s.

Seriously, an 8 round N frame is one of my favorite handguns, and I have a couple of other S&W wheel guns (but not enough) in addition to the previously mentioned 1911s. Here's a picture of my old 627, with some of my current S&W revolvers.

Welcome to the forum,
Pete

I really like mine. I bought it specifically as a carry gun. I've only had it about six weeks, but I expect it'll outlast me.

I put on a set of Hogue laminate grips (that I reshaped and refinished), I swapped the cylinder release for one that is more ergonomic for me, and I put on a set of Cylinder & Slide Extreme Duty white-dot sights. Also stippled the backstrap just to add a little traction for the heel of my hand.

The 627 8 shots are a blast to shoot. It is weird the first few times firing 8 shots though. Still not used to it.

I have the "budget" 627-5 with the 4" normal contour barrel. The cylinder was NOT cut for moonclips from the factory. Is this the model you are referring to? It's an excellent revolver. I removed the lock from mine and had a forged grooved .265" trigger installed. I didn't plan on having mine moonclipped but eventually had it done because you just gotta have an 8-shooter moonclipped. The moonclip configuration works surprisingly well for a rimmed cartridge which was never intended to be moonclipped. Even though there is no full lug under the barrel, the barrel is thick enough (no flats on this barrel) to provide a nice muzzle heavy feel. My only complaint is the red ramp front sight which will soon be replaced.

For the same or less money, I would rather have a older, no lock model even though I have 2 less shots. Still, nice gun but I just don't like locks!

You definitely cannot go wrong with a S&W 627 Pro Series. It has all of the features of a S&W PC gun (cut for moon clips, quick change front sight) and a very nice double and single action trigger.
