This seems to be an ongoing discussion. The S&W website lists all of the basic "j" frames as having an alloy frame and a stainless cylinder. The only difference..some have a matte silver finish, the others have a matte black finish. Just what is the finish...paint, polycoat. Why the big secret? Also why is the 642 $20 cheaper than the 442?
If the model number is 4xx, the frame is anodized aluminum. 3xx are anodized scandium. A 6xx frame is usually stainless steel, except the airweights which are anodized aluminum.
When an alloy frame is hard anodized, dyes can be added to create just about any color. If the the anodizing is left clear, it gives the appearance of the alloy under it, usually dull grey.
