Picking up a 686 7.5in
My best friend is gifting me a tricked out 686 in 7.5in. He used it for Silhouette competition for years and is no longer shooting it. I have heard this is a pretty rare gun in this length. I would need to know what to insure it for so I'll be covered in the instance something untoward happens. AND of course I'll be shooting it A LOT! So I'll be asking him what load to do up for it but was wondering what hotish .357 mag round you guys use in the longer barrel 686 like this. I will most likely also use it for Feral Pig hunting here in New Mexico.

14.5 gr of IMR 4227 and 158gr Hornady XTP's is wicked accurate in my 4", Would have to imagine it would work even better in the longer barrel.

I use 16 gr of H110 behind any jacketed 158gr bullet. Magnum primers too.

I'm unfamiliar with that variation. It looks like a -3, with the flash chromed hammer and trigger and it's old style frame. Don't see a Performance Center logo, so standard production. Looks somewhat similar to the better known 7-inch 149198 which was a -5, from the PC, and had an unfluted cylinder.
I'd say the value is somewhere in the $900 to $1,500 range. Sorry for the wide price gap, but that's just the nature of these types of firearms.
Would be curious to know if it's factory drilled and taped (?). If you have the original factory box, I would be very interested in seeing a picture of the label.

I just had a 7" Barrel installed on a Model 686. In process of working up a good hunting load. I have a 8 3/8" Model 686 topped with a red dot scope that is scary accurate. Way more than I am for sure. Got the same red dot installed on the 7" and finished up a run of test loads tonight. Hopefully a range session Friday afternoon will get me headed in the right direction

Knowing this friend, I'll get the box and all the papers. As soon as I get it I'll post pics of them.
