Default Lady Smith and model #'s

Hi everyone, I'm really glad to have found you all. My father-in-law passed away 20 years ago. He only owned a couple of guns, one being a Lady Smith 38 special. After 20 years, my wife has finally talked her mom into letting us have his guns! He probably bought the pistol used, it has Pachmayr grips. I own a few long guns, but no pistols. Question: where do I find the model #? Other information would be appreciated. Thanks.

If the revolver is a Smith & Wesson newer than 1957, it will have the model number stamped inside of the crane/yoke when you open the cylinder, likely something that says "MOD 60" or "MOD 36" or something similar.

If the model number of the S&W revolver starts with a "6" (i.e. 60, 65, etc.) it is made from stainless steel. Otherwise, it will be made from blued- or nickel-plated carbon steel.

If it is a S&W, you can post the first four or five digits of the serial number (including any preceding letters, found on the butt of the grip frame when you remove the grips) and we can look up its age.
