Default How to remove scratches from 629 DX

I just purchased a dx (the seller- not from here-was less then straight foward with respect to the condition) I have never done anything aside from standard cleaning of guns. The 629 has alot of scratches, I cant image what tails the gun could tell but it looks like it was slid accross the floor and used as a hockey puck. The seller said "great condition aside from a few small scratches" yeah a few hundred maybe..

Now that I have finished ranting, how do I remove these marks with out changing the finish of the gun? I know I could use a brasso or chrome polish but I dont want a mirror finish as I am afraid this will remove the smith markings from the gun. Can it be done and still retain the stock type satin look?
What are the steps and do you have pics of your results?

thanks in advance...and hopefully I can begin to restore the finish today..

thanks again

That is an all too common comment.
Freedom Arms says that you can polish a scratch out of their field grade finishes with a red 3M scrubbie. I did it to my FA M83 with "good" results. That finish is similar to your 629DX but not exactly the same. I have polished scratches out with a progression of sand paper (to 2000 grit) but it does end up pretty shiny and not looking quite right. All of this being said (and if nobody else posts any better ideas), try the red 3M scrubbie and the Birchwood Cassey lead removing cloth. I do think that most polishing will do just that, polish the gun and make it brighter than it should be. I hope I helped some.
Good luck,
Mark

Scratch it up some more with green scrubber type sponge until it matches the rest of the gun.

If you do decided to polish the whole gun just be careful and don't polish over the writing. It works....even I can do it so it must be simple. With enough work, you will have a gun that looks just like a nickel gun.

Scotch Brite works well along with some Mother's Mag and Aluminum Polish.

Have it gently bead blasted until the scratches are gone but first try Scotchbrite pads Available at bigger Auto paint stores. White and dark gray keep my 629 just right.

Just out of curiosity, what site was the gun listed on and what is the seller's handle? I bought a 5" 629-3 DX on GunBroker a few years ago (can't recall the seller's handle but I would probably recognize it) and some of the accessories that were supposed to included were missing. Seller claimed he didn't know extra sights came with a DX. Fortunately, the gun was like new.

A few weeks later, I was surprised to find my same DX for sale by the same seller. I sent him an email about it and he replied that he had erroneously used the wrong photos but a year later, I saw them again.

It sounds like we might have dealt with the same guy.

Removing scratches is a two step process. First clean well with a led-away cloth. Then using the tip of your finger apply a lite coat of Mothers Mag Polish, let haze up then buff with a soft 100% cotton rag. Repeat step 2 as necessary.

Now if you are fussy about the looks of your revolve apply a LITE coat of wax. Let haze up and buff off. Don't use the same rag to remove the was you used to remove the Mothers.
