Question Question on Serial Number Stamped on Left Side of Frame Under Cylinder is it Factory?

A Model 60-14 I was looking at on the left side of the frame under the cylinder is where the serial number has been stamped as well as the normal spot where the cylinder opens. Is this factory serial number stamping? Also in taking off the grips it is stamped on the side of the frame not on the butt of the frame. Just wondering....thanks.

Default 60-14

I would say yes since I have a 60-14 3" .357 and it is stamped exactly as you have described [including the one on the side of the frame on the left side under the cylinder].

Regards, John

Thanks John
I was hoping that it was factory and no one did it on their own, as I have never seen one stamped like that before.

I have seen that on some 686's. I believe it did not last long.

I have seen this on a M696-1. It looked laser etched. I had a M629-3 that had the SN laser etched underside of the top strap.

It’s factory, S&W did some strange stuff in the late 1990’s. BATF eventually set standards on the depth of the markings.

This 60-10 is marked on the grip frame, under the cylinder and in the yoke cut. The markings show virtually no depth, but for some reason a reverse image transferred onto the grips.

A friend has a 342PD that's marked the same way.

I recently purchased a 686-5 PowerPort in order to get another S&W I wanted and it (the 686) was marked like that, too.
