Default 66-5 3" Is it a collector?

Gentlemen,

Came across a 66-5 w/original box/papers, condition 90% (w/scratches), is this model with MIM hammer/trigger/internals, considered a "buy" for under $900.00? (A concern is removing the scratches, as I have no experience and worry about making it worse). Seems the model 66-5 & 66-6, are not as desirable to due to the MIM parts & lock (66-6). But the price seems attractive as I have seen most 66 3" (w/box/papers) go for well over 1K on GB. Or would a 66-3 3", no box/papers, but in 99% condition (forged parts), for about the same cost be a better buy?

Gun would not be so much for shooting, more for collecting.

Wondering which is more a priority in event resale becomes necessary in the future, gun/box/papers or the gun/quality? Unfortunately, cannot afford both at the same time.

Appreciate any feed back.

A 90% gun isn't a "collector" in my book. That's shooter/knockabout carry grade. Yes,a 3 inch 66 is desirable, but anywhere near 900 for that shape or even better, isn't happening with me.A lot closer to 500 imo.
I desire quality far more than paper and boxes.A box and papers that come with a shooter grade, are items that I peddle to reduce my cost.

For what it's worth, I recently picked up a M66-5 with a 3.25" bbl, green hi viz front sights and in very good condition, box, papers and all for $600 (not counting shipping and FFL fees). I had it checked out by my gunsmith; he didn't think it had more than 200 rounds through it, although the actual round count is unknown. I bought it from a collector who was thinning his herd. Its going to be a shooter.

I would say the 3" 66-5 is one of the last of the desireable 66's. Yea, its got MIM parts, but no lock.

$900 for that variant is a little steep in my opinion. I see the 3" 66-2's and 3" 66-3's bringing $900 + but not the -5. $650 to $750 would be what I'd expect to pay.

With the scratches and wear you mention, I'd go less than $650. Good luck! Regards 18DAI.
