Model 57 or 58 .41 mag - Help Me Decide
Thinking about picking-up a 4" 57 or 58. It will be used as an occasional self-defense carry piece / range.
Pros/Cons of either?
Thanks.

The obvious difference is the sights. The adjustables on the M57 allow you to set it for different loads at different ranges. With the fixed sight M58 you takes what you gets.
The M58 may be harder to come by, and probably more expensive too. Everybody wants one now, including me. I have a 4" M57 and really like it, although I can't remember ever carrying it.

According the their web site[for whatever that means!] the model 58 in blue or nickel is still listed - doesn't mean their running any but some might be out there if you try.
Davidson's has two blue 58's in inventory and one blue 4" 57 as of this evening - I was surprised that there's only a $10 increase for the model 57!!
Good luck on your quest.

I was always a bigger fan of the 57 than the 58 because of the adjustable sight. I carry mine out in the woods and occasionally hunting so I want something that can shoot accurately for longer distances. You can tune handloads to the Model 58 so that it hits at point of aim, where as with the 57 you are sighting the gun to the load.

Go for the 4" Model 57!! A friend of mine is retired military, but active law enforcement has a model 58. He knows how to shoot but consistently has problems with his model 58 accuracy wise. As much as the Model 58 is a beautiful revolver, I think I like the 57 for the ability to adjust the sights. I have a few model 57's and a model 657 so I'm a little biased. c good

Same here. I have a 58 and as much as I like it for general duty (woods bummin, home defense, and the occasional racoon or groundhog) I think you'd be happier with the 57 as it allows you to dial it in for different loads.
Simply put; the 58 is a fightin/service revolver, the 57 is a target/ hunting revolver although it makes a good fighter too. Plus 57s are a little prettier. Dale

Thanks for all the great info.
I actually already have a 57 MG, but I'm not a big fan of the tapered barrel. And I haven't even shot it yet.
I think I'm leaning towards the standard 57.
Anyone ever have a 58 cut down to 3"? I think that would make a sweet carry piece.

Join the Cult....buy a 58
I have both 657's, and 58's....I really like the 58's and can dial in my reloads to match the sights....maybe I have been brainwashed....I just love the M&P on steroids
The 41 Rem Mag is a winner either way. Good luck with your choice.

I have a 58 and a 57. The one thing to remember is that this is an N frame, steel revolver. I have carried my 58 a few times and it is heavy. Adding the shroud on the 57 makes it that much heavier.
I reload for these revolvers and I do very well with both of them, so accuracy is a moot point with me.
You can't go wrong with either of them.

"It will be used as an occasional self-defense carry piece / range."
Given the stated purpose the best choice between a 57 and a 58 would be a Model 19.
The N frames are really big and heavy. Far from the best choice for carry.
The 58 is more a collector curiosity than a viable carry gun.
The 41 Magnum is excessively powerful for self defense use.
You get a 57 after you already have a 29 and numerous 357 Magnums. You get a 58 after you have a 57.

I say when in doubt get both. Get all the "N" frame S&W's while we still can. I love the S&W wheel guns. Thank God that S&W hasn't discontinued them all. But i do wish they still had the 8 3/8" barrel in the M27, M57 and M29's. I'd buy them all too.
Ok its heavy, but its also a heavy hitter too at 800+ ft lbs too. Were double the ft lbs at what some of the other auto's are. Its all about the stopping power and sitting them down very quickly. I just may try handgun hunting soon too.
In January i purchased the S&W M57 w/6" barrel in nickel finish for $699. In February i purchased the S&W M58 w/4" barrel in nickel finish too. Now its March and my next purchase is going to be another S&W in 41mag but i'm not sure if i want a M657 or a M57 w/4" barrel. I did put the pachmayer presentation rubber grips on my m57 and i put the M57 wood grips on my M58. My gotta have list is growing now too. I want a M27 in 357mag and a M29 in 44mag but maybe a few of each will do too. Right now its all about the 41's. We only pass this way once and don't get a second chance so do it right the first and only time. I passed on the S&W's years ago and i'm getting a second chance now to get the classics. Now the window of oppertunity is open for all of us too. Bill
BTW; The S&W nickel finish is really purdy ain't it??? S&W does nickel finishes right.......

I've carried the ruger redhawk's in 44mag with the 7 1/2" & 5 1/2" barrels for may years now. The N frames are much lighter. Plus its the knock down power too. Bill

I don't know why but my local gun shop has all the S&W's in 41mag marked $699 and they list for over $1,100. I just can't pass up any good buy or sale. I'll probably purchase every $699 S&W he has in the next few months. I only see the S&W revolvers as the tops in the revolver market today. There is more disconutinued models than models being offered by the other manufacturers today anyway.(colt & ruger). Its not hard to still be number 1 in revolvers when your still offering most of what you had to offer for many years. I'm hooked on the S&W's now. Bill
