I'm going to guess they do. I see a fair number in the LGS and they seem to turn. There also isn't usually the ones you want to see. I have a fair number of what I call "newer" guns, the ones with the ugly locks and ugly hammers/triggers and ugly barrels.

Collect the old ones, shoot the new ones!
I have M&P's-Model 10's that are nearly 100 years apart in production. It's the 10-14 I take to the range most often. If I break it, S&W will fix it.
If S&W offers a warranty and has parts, will pay for shipping both ways and fix it free if something breaks.......what's so wrong with buying a MIM and IL gun? Nothing!
If your 1930's era M&P breaks, you're pretty much beat, unless you get some other used parts of unknown quality. Need a new ratchet for an 1899 Army marked M&P? Good luck!

I prefer to purchase the new N frame S&W's. My gotta have list is growing. I want to purchase as many new N frames that smith & wesson offers. I have been into guns since i was 10yo and now i'm 60yo and there's something about a S&W that i been a miss'in. I been a ruger guy(redhawks) for most of my life now but after holding my very first brand new S&W model 57 in 41mag with a 6'' barrel for just $699 i was hooked. I now have a model 58 too and i want more S&W N frames too.
If anyone who collects and shoots guns doesn't have or own a a few S&W N frames your kidding me right? Just hold one in your hand and tell me it don't feel good. Bill
My gotta have list;
S&W model 27 357mag 6'' barrel in blue or nickel finish
S&W model 27 357mag 4'' barrel in blue or nickel
S&W model 29 44mag 6 1/2'' barrel in blue, Dirty Harry Blue
S&W model 29 44mag 8 3/8'' barrel in nickel (if they still make it)
S&W model 57 41mag 4'' barrel in nickel
S&W model 57 41mag 8 3/8" barrel in blue (if they still make it)
S&W model 25 45long colt 6'' barrel in blue or nickel
S&W model 657 41mag 2 5/8'' barrel in stainless
S&W model 629 44mag 2 5/8'' barrel in stainless
I'll get them one at a time its my lifes goal now there on my gotta have bucket list before i die. If S&W makes and offers them i will buy them.....the classic N frames thats what its all about. Fishing and guns retirement doesn't get any better.

Instead of downing guys who buy new S&W's, how about bashing people who buy Taurus and say they are just as good as S&W's

I like all guns from the antique stuff to the surplus military guns to the new ones now no matter what the brand is there all a different breed just like all of us thats what makes it fun. Is one better than the other i'm not sure but i need to get more to see if thats true or not. I like my rugers, I like my S&W's heck i like them all............... Bill
BTW; I have looked at the taurus 22cal revolver for $350. It looked good but i haven't held it yet. I run into people at the local range who hate my chinese norinco sks. I say nothing and let my 1 1/2'' groups at 100yds with iron sights on my paratrooper sks with the 16'' barrel on the paper do my talking. I even let some non believers shoot ballons(little ones) at 100yds and these guys never shot an sks before and never missed. There believers now. Its fun to shoot something different.

I'm new to S & W, and after a lot of research both in and out of this Forum, I bought a 686-4 in excellent condition. The revolver performs flawlessly.

I own 4 Taurus wheelguns, it gives me the right to bash on them a little bit
I like to take pictures of my Taurus 82 next to my 10-14 and make little funny posters with them......like the generic stuff you buy at Wal-Mart, "Taurus! Compare to ingredients of S&W!"

The taurus is a poor mans gun, I can see that. But me myself have when without till I could get a Smith. When it comes to selling a hand gun, I don't deal in junk, and that covers way more than a taurus. There are alot that is sold that the taurus is king to them. Depends on the company you keep how it is rated.

Smith & Wesson has sold me four new revolvers over the past few years. I don't give a hoot about the lock, as I render it irrelevant.

Me too, i could careless about the lock, but if it at least saves one childs life i can live with it. But it won't stop me from purchasing new S&W's. Even my new SA 1911a1 has a key loc too these are for careless gun owners who don't lock up there guns or store them away from childern. They need to suck it up and do it right to save lives. This is why the gun manufacturers are trying to improve on gun safety because some of us aren't doing there part there slacking. Gun safety never sleeps. Gun safety starts at home...... Bill

I just purchased a 642-2CT. Great gun, I wanted a light carry gun and I trust wheels alittle more than a semi. Although I do own semi's.

I too am relatively new to S&W. Two years ago, I bought a brand new 686+, 2 1/2" , and added CT laser grips. Could not be happier, could not care less about MIM or IL. Both of those seem like urban legends - I know a guy who knows a guy whose second cousin had a lock up... You get the picture. If S&W didn't sell a lot of revolvers, I suspect they would get out of the business.

I did buy a Model 22 (Model of 1917). These new repros have beautiful case colored frames in some versions, very very nice. A friend bought the Model 22 (Model of 1950) with the same case colored frame. Also nice.
I'm new at this, but with the exception of these, I'll stick with the older Smiths.

I don't object to the lock as I have shot a lot of rounds through revolvers with the lock & have never had an issue.

Bought a new 442 a few weeks back with no lock. Wanted a new 686, but will not buy a revolver with a lock even if it is a Smith&Wesson. I ended up buying a new Ruger GP100. Am happy with both.

I think the GP100 has a lock too, but at least it's tastefully hidden.

The GP100 has no lock, you may be thinking of the LCR.
I don't own an LCR but have 10 or so GP100's and not one has a lock anywhere on it.
The best solution to the lock whiners.......go buy a Ruger!

Heck, I buy what I like and like what I buy.
More importantly, I always ask myself "does it make monetary sense?" I have to say that for a lot of new firearms from nearly all the makers, I'd have to say no- they are overpriced to me. Most used guns in dealers are overpriced terribly for my liking...
I just wait until one with the right price comes along- might not be what I wanted exactly, but things usually just happen along.
Do your duty and "Just say no to overpriced guns!"

I bought a new Model 36 in 2009 - a nickel 3" Chief's Special. It was love at first sight and I paid dearly for it. And I bought an unissued 2007 Model 64 snub-nosed Brinks Special this year. I purchased the 64 from the dealer who took delivery of it from S&W and I'm the first owner so technically it is new. Caught a deal, too. List was $629. In a warehouse clearance sale I paid $400 out-the-door.

I've purchased a few older revolvers lately, pre IL's. That's not why I bought them, I bought them because I was attracted to the models appearance and caliber, price was affordable. Now I've also wanted a model 66 and or 686, 357 mag guns, doesn't matter whether they are IL or not. The problem is buying one of these used, tends to end up in the $650 range and up.... for a used gun.. After watching a few of these guns go for over $650, over $700 shipped to me... I'll buy brandy new from the S&W showroom.. when I can afford it.

If you have small kids the gun should be locked up out of the reach of there tiny hands. But if you keep it close by at night the key loc should be used with small children. Practicing gun safety starts at home. Bill

Again i was looking for a new SA 1911a1 loaded in stainless when i spotted the new S&W's in 41mag for just $699 when they list for $1,161. No one in there right mind would pass these up. Heck i'll purchase every S&W thats tagged $699 no matter what caliber it is, even with the key lock. My 2005 SA 1911a1 G.I.-Mil-Spec made in brazil has a key lock in the rear spring housing. That doesn't bother me too. I say get over it and buy them up. Bill
BTW; I'm after the S&W nickel finish too. With most gun manufacturers dropping there nickel finishes and discontinuing models all the time S&W people are smart by still offering there classics in blue or nickel too. S&W keep them comming i'll purchase all that i can. I just got my 401k to play with.

Like I said in an earlier post, I'm not buying any gun with a lock on it. I'll stick with the older, and in my opinion, better S&W's that are out there.

Old and new, I've got both.......and I am still looking for new IL revolvers. They are all good guns, for different reasons.
The older ones are not without flawed examples, trust me. They were subject to the same issues many complain about here with the "shoddy IL guns"...... The M&P on top was made in 1918 or so and the cylinder face rubs on the forcing cone when the cylinder is closed......it was made that way, because this gun looks to have hardly seen a round....the gun still works, it does it's intended job so I doubt the owner cared much.....maybe some guy in 1918 who bought this was whining about those "new" Hand Ejectors not being as good as the "old" Break Top guns.....
The 10-14 above shoots ragged holes at 25 yards, after I added some drop in "tune up" parts. I caught flak for owning a MIM and IL S&W........ it shoots rings around any of my older ones. The action on the 10-14 is so slick it makes the M&P seem rough. I'm not saying my older guns aren't as "good" as the new guns, but the new IL guns are my choice for shooting, and the old ones are for collecting, reminiscing, historical value and I love them for that. But when it comes time to send a couple hundred rounds of .38 downrange I grab the new ones.
The 64-7 is totally reliable, accurate and I have used it as a CC gun.
This 64-3 freezes up solid after about 50 rounds....made in 1978....one of your good older ones, I guess.
This 10-5 is as perfect as it gets, shoots to POA dead on, action slick as glass, super accurate.
Judge the individual gun, not the "era" it was made in, or whether it's what you're "supposed" to own.
Whenever there's change, people will say "the old ones were better".......

I prefer the older ones & think they have better fit & finish but recently bought a new 3" model 63 because I love 3" barreled revolvers. It shoots very well & I didn't even have to adjust the sights. I have no idea if the IL works & have no intention of ever using it.

Not really interested in any of the newer guns. Price and umm... "other things."
If price was no object I would probly go for one of the 8 shot 627 or 10 shot .22.

I would onely buy a new model if I REALLY liked it and needed it.
For example . I am thinking about buying the new Performance Center 2 inch , 8 shot 357 magnum. This is something I woudl really like to carry in the summer, off duty.
Other than that I am ONLY interested in pre-lock, pre-mim guns.

i bought the s&w 357 magnum performance center 8 shots model 327 2" barrel
excited,,, went to the range and shot 50 rounds 38 special Ammos,,,took it to the next level with hornady 125 gr 357 and after the first 8 rounds the cylinder opened but the empty jackets wouldn't eject ,,asked for help from the range person who told me that the use of the 38 had caused accumulation of bore and that was the reason for the jamm , after cleaning it and going back to the range , I loaded up with 8 rounds of 357 hornady 125 grains and this time it shot three bullets and the cylinder would not rotate to shoot anymore and would not open ,,,a complete lock out,,does anyone know if this is a defect in the model or I just happen to get unlucky with this one gun? I appreciate any replies as I need to solve this problem by monday

smith has lowered there prices in the past few months, example: model 637,638 were 616.00 now 449.00 not all reflect that big of a cut most are substantial. the other thing smith has going for it is a retail store opened to the public and a range to shoot any gun they make. so my guess is they sell tons of revolvers

This is an excellent question.
Personally, I do not, and would not, own any S&W product made with that silly lock. And even with that issue aside, most current S&W firearms just don't seem to have that quality feel that the old ones do. I know that metallurgy has improved, and machining is more precise, and all that, but I can't get excited about some toy-feeling lightweight that looks weird. (And I freely admit the above comments are probably an age thing...sometimes I feel like such an old fart! LOL!)
I don't have any figures, but I suspect that most gun owners don't shoot all that much, and I think the round count on many used firearms, even ones that are very old, is usually low. Given a choice between a near-new condition 30 or 40 year old revolver, made the old-fashioned way, and one of the "modern" models, I will go for the older gun everytime.
If they would drop the lock, I might be persuaded to take another look at the current S&W lineup.

I just bought a 642-1 (without the lock) I love it, and I cant argue with the lifetime warranty for the original owner. I also just talked to my local gun shop, and have them bringing in a 627 performance center for me. The first thing I will do is remove the lock. But other than that you cant complain about new. If it has issues to the factory it goes You might be able to do that with an older model as S&W is pretty reputable for taking care of their product but Id rather not deal with the hassle. For someone new to the collecting world, of course I would want some older more desirable models, but just because something is new and different does not make it worse off. Everyone complains about the IL. I believe they should give you a choice between IL and not, but they don't for the most part. Not for now at least.

They only manufactured approximately 222,000 revolvers in 2009 and exported fewer than 1200. http://www.atf.gov/statistics/downlo...ort-report.pdf
Some body is buying or they're stacked up high in warehouses.

See the new annual report out. S&W made $77 Million from the sale of Revolvers last year. So, "someone" must be buying them.

Don't get out much, huh? They've been making them without the lock for awhile now.

Ok. I just talked to my local shop and had them order a 627 PC for me. I was wondering if maybe it could come without one ni guess not. I'm looking to remove the lock any way. Don't know how yet, I have just heard it mentioned. Has anyone tried makin a plug for the hole to try and eliminate the hole and keep it clean looking?

My son recently bought a Pro Series 686 S SR. I had the opportunity to shoot it this week. All I can is wow! If people are not buying SW revolvers, they should be! This is a great guy to shoot. Accurate, balanced, just wonderful. I want one too!

This thread drew a lot of comments! My two bits...S&W's are a classic, American gun. I can take the cheap-looking lock with the ******, pop-up piece of tin by the hammer on the modern revolvers, but not on the Classic Series. Some of the retro guns are beautiful, but how can they be called "classic" with that junk on them. I only buy (collect) the old models (pre-lock).

Well, for starters, I really like the 8-shot 627s that S&W is making these days -- both the "Bloodwork" reissue as well as the non-PC heavy-barrel 627.
And come to think of it, I'm very fond of my 629-6 Trail Boss with unfluted cylinder.
They don't have the romance of the older guns, and the MIM parts aren't as aesthetically satisfying to me as their older tool steel counterparts. But they're still great 'working guns'.
