s&w 642 "Talo"
Just purchased my first S&W hand gun and it is a 642 "Talo" Edition. My question is this....Are the grips the only diff.? I believe so, just wanted to check with the experts on here.
Product: Model 642 Deluxe 1-7/8in. Textured Wood Grips

As far as I know, that's the only difference.

It might also have a forged trigger and hammer like the other S&W Talo offerings.

I'll just throw out there that looks and comfort with respect to grips could be at opposite ends of the spectrum when talking about j-frames. There is also a direct correlation between how comfortable a firearm shoots and how many rounds / how much you train with it.

Would love to get those grips on my 642! I wonder if S&W will ever offer them a la carte?

I've ordered Performance Center grips from S&W before, so I'd assume you'd be able to.
Here's a pic for those not wanting to use the link.

I just purchased this grip from S&W. Contact customer service and let them know it is a Talo distributor grip with SKU 150551- here's the link
Product: Model 642 Deluxe 1-7/8in. Textured Wood Grips
The grips are held aside for production but are available. You may have to be patient and wait as production has priority.
Will cost ya ~ $62 plus shipping.

They are Altamont oversized finger grove grips. Altamont - Pistol Grips
Scroll down. Probably ship within a week. Send an e-mail or order by phone and they will "custom" make them for you.

The ones on Altamonts page are similar to but not quite the same as the Talo ones. For one, the bordering on the checkering is different. Two, the Altamont ones have the fluer de lis in the checkering, the Talo does not. Third, the Talo grip has the S&W logo lasered on, the altamont grip has metal medallions. While it's quite obvious that Altamont makes these grips for Talo, there are subtle differences.

Hi, I'm a new member. I own four S&W handguns, including two beautiful vintage 19's, a 317 I bought for my wife, and a 642 that she bought for me. I'd like to change the grips from the rubber ones that came with the 642, but I don't seem to have the right Allen key to remove the factory grips. Do any of you experts know the correct size Allen wrench to accomplish that?

Ha ha, I watched those Talo ones get insanely high too. What were they thinking?
I bought these non-Talo ones, and couldn't be happier... Smith & Wesson S&W J Frame Grips Rosewood New Checkered | eBay . It's the 2nd set for my of gungripsupply grips, and I love 'em both.

The thing I like about all of the Altamont grips are they fit well and every pair you buy fits well. Very consistent and very well made.

Thanks, I used the 3/32 hex/Allen key to remove the stock 642 grip. I replaced it with a Hogue S&W J frame to pick up a little extra length in the grip. The Hogue replacement grip uses a flat head screw.

While this is true, a simple call to Altamont and speaking with Doug will get you the very same grips made...with or without a metal medallion, with or without a laser engraved medallion, and in wood stains other then "Rosewood" if one desires.
I ordered 2 pair of the Combat grips with factory medallions, and they were made and delivered in 3 days, and cost was $55.00 each.

On my Timney trigger gauge the trigger pull consistently measures 9 1/2 lbs of the smoothest trigger pull you will find on a J frame.

This thread was from years ago. The original piece in question is NOT the recently released PC edition Talo special.

I just got one of those. Trigger is very nice, but cylinder release is very gritty.

Just picked one of these up on Sunday and it is sweet. Trigger and action were exactly like my 2.5 inch 642-2 which I had an action job and spring replacement done to a couple years ago. My wife confiscated it to be her EDC, so I "needed" a new J-Frame.
The grips do the best job of any in keeping my knuckle from hitting the back of the trigger guard. They are custom made by Altamont for S&W.

I took the 642 Performance Center Enhanced to the range and fired about 100 rounds of 125, 130 and 158 grain regular and +P ammo. Gun is right on point of aim and was very comfortable to shoot. Quite accurate-when I did my part. Dang, I'm really rusty after nearly two years without regular range trips.
The neoprene grips with wood panels are the most comfortable, control enhancing short profile J frame grips I've ever used, and I've used many! Glad I spent the extra money vs. the wood grip/non polished version. No lock on this on too.

Luv my 442 pc. Wish it was cut for moonclips like the 642 is. Not a fan of the cheesy clip grip it came with so I swapped for some of the rubber boot grip Altamonts that have the wood inserts. Much better handling and looking. Great little guns, especially for the price. 400$ from Buds. Might grab the 642 pc now, just because!
