S&W 17-4
I have a 17-4 that I haven't date coded yet but I believe it was made somewhere in the mid 80's. The pistol is in excellent condition with a few options like factory target grips, hammer, and trigger. My question is about the value and desirablity of this gun vs any other .22 pistol I have and carry. I am new to this site and I did some searches but got overwelmed by the vast amount of information here.
thanks

Welcome to the forum
You have a fine and very popular gun in the model 17. They are hot items and could probably bring from $450 to $700 depending on condition and location.

If you have the box and any of the accessories that adds to the value. I think Iggy is accurate with the values. I just bought a very nice 17-4 from a member here for $525 TT, TH non-factory stocks.

They are very nice target revolvers I have 3, all earlier models and I shoot em all. They are a bit long and heavy for carry but make up for it in accuracy.
$450.00 to $700.00 is a good average for your model. If it is in good shape and tight it will last a long long time.

for the reason you mentioned I am considering selling it and getting something that is better for all day carrying while grouse hunting here in MN. I appreciate all the responses.

Welcome to the forum. I would say the Model 17s are top notch .22 target revolvers, along with the Colt Officers Model .22s. Desirability is very strong for these revolvers, as they don't make these beautiful blued revolvers with the pinned barrel and recessed chambers. Most manufacturers just don't put the workmanship into .22s, like Smith and Colt did, back in the day... Because of this, these guns are very sought after.
Condition always leads the way on value, but having the target trigger and hammer is also a plus. Generally speaking, collectability, and value is usually enhanced by having an older/earlier model (pre model 17, then 17-1, then 17-2, etc...). But again, pinned and recessed puts the desirabilty and value up there, and the -4s have that. Having the original box and docs also ups the ante. Hard to gauge without pictures, but based on your description of "excellent condition," I'd say at least $500, to $700. Again, original box also adds to the value.

I've got a 17-4 with 8 3/8 barrel, 3Ts etc.
I haven't seen a better target 22 revolver anywhere. And it was a bit awkward for field carry.....so I found something with a shorter barrel:
BUT.....it's mint unfired....so NOW the problem is....Safe Queen or Shooter.....Shooter or Safe Queen.....life is full of difficult decisions....

I hate to see you conflicted with such a decision. Just send it to me!
Congratulations on a nice DW. I have a rough beater DW in .357 Mag and a pristine .357 Maximum. DW's are great guns.

I have a 17-4 with 8 3/8 barrel that I added a set of S&W combat grips to and it shoots like a laser beam. If you are satisifed with a 22 for carry sell your Model 17 and pick up a Model 18 with 4 inch barrel.
Model 17-4
Model 18-3
