Default 629-5 , but what eactly IS this??

Here are pictures of a 629-5 Trail Boss I have had for a while. The product code is 103658. In doing some research, I cannot find a -5 Trail Boss listed in SCSW. Also, the product code on the label refers to a 3" Carry Classic from 1999. I believe all the Trail Bosses were RSR Special guns, while the Carry Classic I believe was a Lew Horton gun. So I am totally confused. As the pics show, this is a fluted, 3" ported gun and came with the wood laminated grips. The S&W rubber grips were also in the box. The side plate says "Trail Boss".

So, basically, the product code does not match Trail Boss, but the serial number on the box matches the gun.

What exactly do I have here?? I plan to call S&W on Monday, but I thought I would put this out to the forum.

What's also interesting is even though your gun has a date code of September 28, 1998, which jives with a -5, S&W didn't introduce that style of box until 2005.

My guess: the gun went back to the factory for some reason. It was repackaged (maybe the original box got lost or damaged), put in a new box with a new label, and the wrong Product Code was selected when the label was printed.

I think the proper Product Code should of been 103408. I saw another one just like yours with a s/n of RSR92xx. That gun had a January 27, 1998 ship date, and was in the old style blue plastic box that was correct for that era.

That would explain it. Thanks Kernel.
