Default Performance Center Model 13 With PICS

Hello gentlemen...and ladies. I joined this forum for only one reason. I recently acquired a Performance Center Model 13-4. I've been told its a Law Enforcement version. It has Hogue brand grips.

I don't have the original box or paperwork, just the pistol. I want top dollar for the gun. Sorry, I'm a semi auto guy. But I do appreciate this particular firearm.

I would, however, like to learn a little bit more about it. What can you all tell me about these PC 13's (especially a law enforcement edition.)

the serial number is HPC0012.

Welcome to the forum.
Is this one of the M13s with 4 ports on a 3" barrel?

The SCSW says these had a 1995 suggested retail price of $760. I would guess that was NIB.

Greetings.

No Performance center guns were "law enforcement" guns that I know of.
I believe you have been mis informed.

3" K frames are a hot item right now, and P.C. guns in high
condition do command a premium.
The trend I am seeing is the mag-na-port guns, even factory issued
are not hot sellers.
There was a 3" model 66-4 that recently sold at auction and only
brought in the high 600s$. Without the porting, it would have been considerably more.

Good luck with your sale. There may be someone willing to trade a
good quality 1911 for your gun.
Good pictures and accurate description of any flaws is essential.

Regards
Allen Frame

thank you for the suggestions, Allen. Yes, pictures would do well.

I didn't quite think much of the LE edition idea either. didn't make a whole lot of sense to me.

I also find the argument of the ports very poor. I'm not going to be firing the gun in a defensive posture at eye level. As a SWAT and Defensive Pistol instructor we teach many different firing positions and i have been struck by porting debris. The inconvenience of hot shards is (should be) the least of any person's concerns when faced with a deadly force encounter.

So now, subconsciously, an irrational fear of hot gasses and metal has been planted and overrides a much needed rational understanding of defeating ones attacker.

How do you lose a knife fight? By being afraid of being cut.

I,m off my soapbox now. Sorry. Any ways, about the gun.

What could I expect to get from an independent buyer?

I would be happy to send to any recipient photos of the pistol.

thanks again Allen

Ultimately, what I want is a Stainless Steel 1911 with Novac cuts, Ambi safety, funneled mag well with hump on mainspring housing. And NO front cocking serrations.

That is a VERY rare and desirable early PC model. Yes 'even' with the four ports. Last one I saw on either GB or GA sold quickly around $900. I have one that I bought years ago or I'd buy yours for that price. Dave

Hi,
That is a very nice model 13. I have never seen one that was magna ported. Some of the responses indicate the revolver is worth a lot of money. Unfornately I don't agree. The model 13 3 inch is highly sought after. But mainly the early dash models. I have priced this at around $550 to $600. It really comes down to what the real market value of your revolver is. For me the revolver is not worth $900. I would buy a early model 13 with a 3 inch barrel non ported revolver before I would buy a ported one. I believe you can use your model 13 as trade bait. But for a well made 1911 I would say you will have too come up with some cash. You might be disappointed on what a gun shop would give you for it. Best place to sell the revolver would be gunbroker. Then you can make a deal on a nice 1911.

Howard

Default Model 13

I would put that gun up for sale on Gunbroker, there were very few of those guns made. I bought one several years ago at $800 NIB.

We disagree. This is a very early PC gun and one of the few SW with bobbed hammer for CCW. The ports work fine. Value compared to a standard Model 13 is, of course, based an rarity. How many Model 13 PCs out there vs the non PC models? Do the math. Dave

as far as rarity, it is one of this first two hundred of a four hundred total run (serial changed at 201). I have never used gunbroker before. Hopefully it's not like eBay.

Thank you to all for your imput. Anyone else have any additional knowledge on the piece to contribute?

I have one of the first run revolvers and I love it. Great trigger, and the ports are not an issue but do seem to help with hot loads. For carry I use +P 38 ammo with low flash powder and I have no problem with with flash blindness at night, and my eyes are getting rather old.
About the serial numbers, I'm pretty sure that the first run was S/N HCP0100 thru HCP0299... the second run would have been 300 thru 499 (my guess). However, I know that the port location is an easy way to tell if the gun is a first or second run. BTW my S/N is in the 200s and is verfied as a first run gun. k

My last input on the Serial runs was strictly speculative; based on what I've read elsewhere.

If I may ask...If yours is a verified first run with a serial in the two hundreds, where does that leave mine with a serial in only the double digits? If the numbers start in the 100?

Can somebody clarify?

According to the Standard Catalog of Smith & Wesson, there were 400 units made for Lew Horton. They all had the four Magna ports, bobbed hammer and came with Secret Service boot grips (which someone aparently removed from yours).

I frequently look for Performance Center guns, such as yours, on GB and suspect that yours would fetch in the neighborhood of $600-$750.

Hope this helps.

Default More info on the PC-13

There were actually two separate production runs of the PC-13. They had different product codes, different serial number prefixes (HPC and JPC), different grips (Eagle Secret Service wood grips and Uncle Mike's rubber combat grips), and different quad-port locations (on the barrel and on the top rib). The serial numbers started at 0001 for each of the two prefixes.

I once owned #0100 from the first run and #0099 and #0100 from the second run. They were great revolvers, and generally traded for very high prices. (A few years ago there was a member here on the forum who was paying four figures for almost every 3" PC revolver he could find. I never paid that much--in NIB condition they usually traded in the $800 to $900 range.)

Some additional info along with pics of each style (with aftermarket grips) can be found here: PC-13

Thank you DC7, that is the info that I couldn't remember, the prefix being the code to first or second run. Did not know that they started both runs at 0001, which is funny since my S/N is above the 200 number. Wonder if they made a few extras?, but anyway that is why I thought the S/N must start at 0100.
dehendrix, I must admit that my typo (thinking faster than my fingers, or maybe the other way around) gave me a laugh as well when I read it tonight. Still can't figure out how the "very sure" that should have been "pretty sure" became "very pretty" <LOL>.
