Congrats! You will love it, and after a few hundred rounds it will slick up, and be your favorite revolver. I have a 10 shot with 6 inch bbl, and just think it's great. You bought a great gun, enjoy it! Mike

All the S&W 22 caliber revolvers are great shooters and you will love the 617. I own a 617 no dash with 6 inch barrel and it's a wonderful shooter and I was lucky to get it with the S&W combat grips that were only on that model for a little while.

YOU GOT A GOOD ONE! Really, I have a 617-1 8 3/8 I put a red dot on it & it's my favorite squirrel gun. TODAY I found a 17-2 6" & I think I'm going to like it as much or more.

I put a Leupold DeltaPoint on mine (Allchin mount) and I love it for pintops and steel.

Picked one up with the 4" barrel a month ago. Shot it once and it's a blast to shoot. Wife even likes it.

I bought a 6" new last year and I absolutely adore it. With it, a couple of DS10 speedloaders and loading blocks and a brick of ammo I'm set for an afternoon

Congrats! Thumbs-up... Loads of fun! With time you MAY feel the urge to lighten the trigger a bit. Plenty of info around if you're a DIY kinda guy, e.g.: Wolf Spring Kit for Model 617... or you may feel the urge to break out the Mothers while staring at the boob tube. Piece of cake! Mine's wearing a cocobolo Hogue here.

You and the grandsons will have a great time with that 617. And it's the perfect training gun for the K and L frame centerfire revolvers like this 686 (top) and 16-4 (bottom).
