This one I've never fired and it still had some packing grease on it when I got it a few years back.

Here's mine:

I had a perfectly good Ruger Security Six with 4" barrel. For no good reason, I was NEVER able to shoot that gun to my potential. I brought the CS-1 home, and IMMEDIATELY was able to shoot MUCH better. I had a complete action done on the Ruger and even after that was NOT able to shoot it well. The Smith made me look GOOD! It is my house gun, loaded with Winchester 140 gr Hollow Points.

WFR that's one pretty piece of leather.

So far, it seems like the 4 is less common...or less desireable.

Awesome, and absolutely beautiful revolvers, folks.

I remember seeing one of those back in the early 90's...........but I've never understood what the differences are. The one I saw had a port ahead of the front sight, which had been moved back. Is it a K-frame or an L-frame?

Well i joined the club today! Although I paid a premium for it, being that I am in California, I do believe that it is worth every penny and I would have no problem recovering my money, and then some in Cali. Never have I held a revolver that felt so "good" in my hand. It is in like new condition with the exception of a very light ring. Came with the original box in great condition.

Here are a few pics!

Nick,

There were a total of 3500 or so CS-1's produced....Janet Reno had about 1500 of them destroyed after she found out that they were being sold to mere citizens. That number included both 3 and 4 inch versions. As far as I remember, there were at least 5000 of the 3" 66 produced...so my bet would lie on the 686 CS-1 of any length being more 'rare' than the 66 3"

Maybe someone has the actual production numbers for the 66's?....I'm just going off of memory here...

What do you consider a premium if you don't mind talking numbers? I'm looking to pick up the 3" version of the OP pic with those same grips - no box etc for $790 shipped.

That sound like a fair price?

I paid a little more than that with the box, but sold my 4" with box for $750.00 I consider the 3" more valuable but that is just me.

it seems a 3" 66-3 would have to be more rare than a 3" CS-1

I am so sick of seeing these 3" CS-1s! I had to grab my 696, no-dash and imagine it being a .357! I want one bad.

I would even settle for a 686 3" NL/non-CS!

I hate all of you guys. I have been a Customs Inspector for 20 years and I have never run across one of the CS-1's. I even have the 1989 Bicentennial Commemorative 586. Well, one of these days I'll be browsing the right page at the right time.

I enjoy shooting and carrying my old Ashland 3" 66-2 more than my 586. Just feels better in the hand, easier to pack, balances better for me and I don't shoot magnums through it so recoil is not a factor. The trigger and accuracy on it is just as good if not better than the CS-1's and -3 that I've shot. JMO.

P-35fan, very nice collection you have there! They all look very handsome in their dressy combats.

Here is mine. I found it on the AR15.com classifieds last year. It had been posted there for two months before I bought it.

Bought this one yesterday for $550. Only marks are the typical drag line on the cylinder. Think that's a good deal?

Yup, that's a good deal even if it wasn't a CS-1...It looks barely used! Enjoy it.

Default My CS-1s

Can I play, too?

Here are my two CS-1s. I bought one back in January 1989 for $298.53 OTD. The other one I bought a bit later and paid more for it.

I just love Ahrend's cocobolo grips. I put them on most of my S&Ws.

Is there some type of social group on the forum for the CS-1? Seems to me that the 4" are more rare but the 3" are more desirable. I have the 4" but really like 3" guns. Maybe I will stumble across a 3" to match.

Default CS-1s

Hey Guys, can I play? Here's mine. Bought it for $285.00 in 1993. It has Millett front and rear sites, they came on it. I had to take some metal off the top of the front sight to get the group to come up to center on a sillouette target. I don't think it had ever been fired until I got it. I carried it as a sworn reserve deputy for about six months and then the dept went to semi-autos.....we still had to buy them ourselves. The Hogue grips are new, I carried it with S&W wood grips and a Tyler T adaptor. It still shoots great. I was totally satisfied with it until I looked at all the CS-1 pictures, now I've got to have a 3". Thanks alot!!!!! Keep shootin'

Default My New 686 CS1 3 inch Acquisition

Here tis my 686 3 inch CS1 that I just picked up yesterday. No original grips or box but it is still a beauty. According to SCWA the serial number dates this to early 1988.

As far as I remember, there were at least 5000 of the 3" 66 produced...so my bet would lie on the 686 CS-1 of any length being more 'rare' than the 66 3"

Maybe someone has the actual production numbers for the 66's?....I'm just going off of memory here...
The Border Patrol contracted pretty much the same thing, a four inch round butt 686, but they were marked BP-1. I was issued one in 1990 and carried it until I got off probation and thought I needed a semi. I've never seen one on the civilian market, likely due to Janet Reno's fanatacism. I would not bank on them being destroyed, however. They were supposed to be, but I would not be surprised if there are crates of them sitting in a warehouse somewhere. Weapons obsolete to one agency might wind up on the GSA schedule and available to other agencies...

Well here is my post and pictures from a similar thread 2 or 3 years ago.

Here is a few pics of my CS-1 4". Gunsmith Andy Horvath in Ohio did the custom front gold bead sight, keeping it the narrowed width like the CS-1 came with, and also added a ball detent lock up in the crane area. I switched out the cylinder release for a little contrast !! I could have bought the 3" from the same guy, but ran into a 3" F Comp at the same time and went with that. Also found almost at the ame time a 686 Quadraport 2.5", and that was close enough to 3 !

There needs to be a button that will allow you to 'LIKE' the whole thread. Nice guns gentleman, just be aware that I hate you all and covet all those nice CS-1's.

It is my house gun, loaded with Winchester 140 gr Hollow Points.

What is the name of the grip on this revolver?

Are they still available?

Know of a good source, at a good price?

I'd like to get a set for my 686 2 1/2"

Thank you.

ALL modern S&W's are at least marked on the frame.

Welcome to the forum bipe215.

Yes, all 686 CS1's had the serial number on the bottom of the grip frame.

The grips pictured on the 4" CS1 above were the issued grips. Pachmyar Compacts. They had a "window" in the bottom of the grips so that the serial number could be viewed without removing the grips. Regards 18DAI

Did all 4" CS-1s come with Pach Compacs w/window. Mine came to me with walnut RB magnas. I recently added these targets thanks to a member here.
