DeSantis makes a nice Leather Thumb Break Scabbard belt holster. The holster listed for a S&W 686 4 inch will fit the S&W 617 4 inch perfectly. Best price I found was at OpticsPlanet.com

I've used the K/L frame Galco silhouette for my 620 and 617 and it works perfectly with either. About the only issue is that my 617 has a 6 inch barrel and in a high riding holster that means you have to pull the grip nearly to the armpit during the draw (an exageration but it does feel that way), so I won't be entering any fast draw contests with the 617.

I prefer the strong holster for my 4" 617. I have carried it both crossdraw and strongside, I am more used to strongside though.
They are not too hard to find, and worth the effort to track down.

The Bianchi #111 Cyclone works well with my 4" 686, 617, and 16-4. It can be worn strongside or crossdraw. I have had mine for over 30 years, but I believe you can still find them at Optics Planet.

I ordered a "120" from Simply Rugged for my 6" 617 and I love it. I can wear it strong side or (which I always do) cross draw.

I have a Bianchi 5 BHL thumb break, and a Safari Land open top with no retention. I switch back and forth between them when carrying my 617, 64, and 686. I like them both.
I will probably add a hi-ride pancake style in the near future. Tex Shoemaker has one that looks ok.

+ 1 on Leather. Also nice to have a backup <$20 Uncle Mikes flap holster, compared here to the standard Uncle Mikes.
Never a bad idea to protect that trigger & grips in heavy brush or bad weather.
