Default Kurac Grips! Post your pics

I have recently purchased a set of kurac grips. They are gorgeous! I have never seen a set of grips as nice as this set. Post pics of your kurac grips, would be a nice reference for someone trying to order a set. Please list the gun they are on and the type of wood if you know.
Mine are shown on a 27-2 and of course I forgot the type of walnut and I have cleaned out my inbox.
Sorry for the bad cell phone pictures

This is a set that John made for me. They are mahogany and are made from a piece that was once part of the bridge wing railings of USS Koelsch. The 28 wearing them and I traveled a lot in the old days.

Good stuff, tennexplorer. Of course all of Kurac's grips are very nice but wood with a story/history like that makes them extra special.

And a 57 with highlighted cocobolo:

Do a forum search for member Kurac. When his handle comes up, you are a click or two away from a link to send him a personal message.

Default Several

I own several sets, but here is my current favorite setup: Pre-model 27, five inch with a factory nickel finish, shipped to Winchester Repeating Arms Company on December 10, 1951 currently wearing a set of Ebony grips from Kurac.

What is the approximate cost of a set of grips, I know it will vary based on the wood chosen, style, etc.

Most of John's grips are about $120.00 plus modest shipping. The wood choice doesn't seem to vary the cost, although if it's "exhibition" wood it might. Great value in Kurac grips.

I will throw my 2 cents in here. The craftsmanship is amazing, the price is very fair, and you will not be disappointed. Other than that, they are just plain ole stocks. lol

Terrific thread - beautiful pictures! I just ordered a set of Kurac Cocobolo Smooth Coke Targets for one of my favorite K frames. This is to be my first set -- probably not the last.

Tennexplorer, I really appreciate the grips you had made from the Koelsch's bridge railing. Great grips and great old P-fired 1200 pounder. I spent some time around the 1049 and her sister ship Voge 1047 - both when they were DE's and later FF's. Great way to keep in touch with your past.

You can't have just one ........... set of Kuracs

The slight palm swell makes them very enjoyable at the range .

Sorry that my pics aren't as great as others here .
A set of Curly Maples on a Model 27 and a set of Claro Walnut on ..... hmmm .....appears to be the Model 28 .

Regards ,
George

I just wish that I had the funds to collect a complete set of n frame S&W medallion grips made by John, one of each of the wood types that he has. The feel, the finish, the grain, the "one of a kind" appeal, and the fit of his work is art following function. I don't know where he gets his blanks, but I think that anyone would agree that they are just plain beautiful. John, keep up the work!

Here's a couple of more just to keep it going. Believe it or not, these are both goncalo alves. John said the wood could differ substantially.

Thanks to all my friends who kindly responded to my inquiry of John Culina's grips. They are being made as we speak and I will post a picture of them on my 586-7 as soon as they arrive.

I have been wanting a set of Kurac ebony stocks for quite a while. I blame this site for my wanting them. Saw a couple of sets and...well... had to have them. Got them on Saturday, they are beautiful on my M27-2. My pics are not good, but the stocks sure are.

I called John about making me a set of square butt magnum targets stocks with a Coke swell to install on my round butt 629. Nothing fills my hand like that profile and I wanted the extra grip with this particular pistol. He said he could do it and I asked about Bastogne Walnut, he said he had a pair in Honey Bastogne Walnut and I put in my order. The fit was so perfect I hardly needed to tighten the screw. He's got any of my future business.

He had an add recently in the accessories for sale. There were a bunch of grips there. Shouldn't be too far back, within the first 2 pages. Larry

I saw John's work a few years ago... way after I left NYC after 9/11 and brought my Pythons with me to Australia. The Colt checkered grips never did it for me...and I shot my Pythons frequently. At my local timber guy, he had an 18" x 5" block of Queensland Red Oak that weighed a ton and is rock hard. On my last trip to US in 2012, I hand carried the block and mailed it to John from NY and requested two pair of Pythons and one pair of S&W K Frame. I'm now returning to USA and sold the Pythons to a good friend last month. He didn't even ask where the 'original' Colt grips were... haha!
Anyway, it's sadly becoming impossible to shoot these old Pythons frequently as spare parts and proper gunsmithing is near impossible. When I get back to US John will make some new grips for my 27-2 3.5", Mod 17 6" Underlug, and 686 Snubby. The Red Oak K's will go on my 4" Mod 15.

My 629-1 wearing Royal Walnut:

I have a set of Cocobolo and BirdsEye Maple coming shortly.

But these are too nice for the 629-1, but I'll keep them on there for now:

Check out the Coke Bottle Shaped Palm Swell (It's what Makes "Cokes" Cokes!)

John and Jennifer are great folks with whom to work.
First off were these N Magnas:

When the combats started, I got in on the first batch:

And then, Jennifer got me an unfinished set that I fitted to a slightly-off Bubba RB job and finished myself:

27-2 3.5" with Exhibition Curly Koa Magna's. They are hard to get pictures of due to the Chatoyance in the wood; the grain changes as you shift the grips and there is a ton of depth that doesn't show in the pic. I got these as an unfinished set and did the final shaping and sanding myself. Love them!!

I love my Kurac grips. I chose not to have medallions added as I like the look without them.

686-2 & 629-2

629-2 with ebony

617-2 bought unfinished in black walnut. I finished them with stain and tinted Tru-Oil.
I had to lighten the photo a lot to show the grain.

686-6 bought unfinished in black walnut. I finished them with stain and tinted Tru-Oil.
These were intentionally stained darker than the above 617 and are tough to photo. But they are dark (which I really like). I hope John takes no offense!
