Im looking for the most comfortable aftermarket grip for my new 642.... Something that will clear a speedloader preferably. Any help is really appreciated.

I replaced the stock grips with Hogue Monogrip 60000, and I think they reduced the recoil shock noticeably. They have a rubber strip that covers the backstrap.

"Most comfortable" is a very personal thing. IMHO the stock grips can't be beat for comfort, but the older Uncle Mike's grips are their equal while offering better clearance for speedloaders.

FWIW my own 642 wears a set of Barami Hip Grips and a Tyler T, wrapped with about 18" of 1" cloth tape. It's butt ugly, but it works great.

The only ones I've found that will clear a speedloader are the Precision Hideout grips. I have a set on my 36 and really like them.

That's interesting. I couldn't get any of my different kinds of speedloaders to work with the Hideout grips. What speedloaders are you using?

I saw someone else had romoved the bottom third of an Uncle Mikes three Finger Combat Grip for a J frame. I got overly curious and destructive and gave it a try. My 637 isn't your 642 but it's pretty close. The small bit of extra rubber over the original gives you a better hold and covers the metal in the back.

I'm also a huge fan of the Uncle Mike's on a J Frame. I once tried cutting on a set for a K Frame and found that they have steel inserts. I leave them unmodified on the J Frame.

I've used HKS, Dade Machine and 5-Star. I should have clarified that I have the finger-grooved grips. From what I've read the others have to be modified slightly but the "combat" grips work from the get-go. Mine did just fine.

i put hogue monogrip model 60000 on my j frame. gives me a full hand grip, reduced felt recoil and works well with a hks speed loader.

The steel is very thin and the saw went right through it. After sanding you don't even feel it. I'm going to coat the metal with something at some point but not sure what.

OK. I didn't try the ones with finger grooves...

Default Old School...

I prefer the original factory wood pre 1991 Magna stocks with a Tyler-T. These give you minimal 'print' and are comfortable enough for me, even on my 640-1 Centennial Magnums.

If you must have rubber stocks, try the Pachmyer "Open Back Professionals". They are similar to what my pal Ralph (Cocked and Locked) shows above but smaller. Once 'tuned' by removing any flash and sharp edges they lay flat, give you speed loader clearance you need and are very easy on the hands with minimal increase in 'print' over the original Magna stocks.

Another vote for Pachmayr Compac. Amazingly great fit, feel, and recoil absorption. The best I've experienced for the J-frame.

I put a set of Altamont Dymonwood boot grips on my 640 and has plenty of room for speedloader clearance.

That's another good choice. I like these Spegel's but I still lean to the ugly rubber Pachmayrs.

Yeah, I agree the Spegels are very nice and certainly are more beautiful to look at, but when it comes to locking that little lion in your hand and gobbling up recoil, the Pachmayr Compac is superb.

Weight I couldn't care less about, but do they add enough size to effect pocket carry?

I like the factory Uncle Mike's that came on my 442, but I'd like to have something that covers the backstrap. Not as much for recoil absorption as a little increased trigger reach. The factory grips are just a tad small for me to get a good grip on.

J.W. Depends on the size of your hands and your pockets. The Compac grips are bulkier and "stickier" than other options, so they may not be the best choice for your particular needs. And of course, as with all things, there's no free lunch. No matter what your choice is, something is always compromised.

Not for me. I usually carry in right front pocket...no problem.

I tried about 3 or 4, including cutting the uncle mikes. I settled on a wood grip that is a little thicker than the original, but doesn't add any length. The longer ones are nice, but I can't hide them in my pocket. I didn't want any material behind the backstrap, just more filling.
These are Kelly.

My vote for the most comfortable are without a doubt the Pachmayr Compacts.

However, these Hogue Grips work well, also:

My daily carry (S&W 642) wears Crimson Trace #305. They have a covered back strap that increases the length of pull (noticeably better for my hands) and they are reasonably comfortable for .38 +P's. They ride just fine in my right front pants pockets in a Mika pocket holster.

Quite true!

I think I'll give them a try. I only pocket carry my 442 in pleated suit pants so I have a little room to spare.

I'll throw my vote in with the Pachmayr Compac crowd if the *only* factor to be considered is fit/comfort; my 60-4 wears a set. Unfortunately, they're too big for my pockets, which is why all my snubbies wear boot grips of one variety or another.

Hogue Bantam Grips with Top Finger Groove S&W J-Frame Round Butt Rubber Black, midwayusa.com/, $18.49. They slip on securely and snugly with no screw to rust.

Just back from the range shooting my 342 AirLite Ti and 642-1 with hogues. Very nice absorbtion of .38 spl's standard and +P explosion. No problem with pocket draw w/Mika pocket holster and jeans.

I'd like to try the Pachmayr Compac but the only thing stopping me is the size. The next I want to try are the crimson trace j-frame grips.

I am looking for a boot grip for my Smith 642-2. The current boot is quite small which I noticed after purchase. I sent back an Ebay seller the Hogue Mono Grip 6000 which was not described on the package as fitting a 642. Many other models were listed. Help, please.

I'm a fan of the Atamont boot grips. They fill the palm of my hand nicely and look good. You do have to make them aware on the order that you want the stocks of your choice relieved for speedloaders though.

I am also a fan of the Pac's and do use them on my J and Krame snubs, but, there is a lot to be said for magnas and a T grip like my 640 no dash has on:

...and since you asked, please indulge me one more pic. The S&W Banana grips on my 642 and Pac's on my 640 are very comfortable and hard to beat for extended range visits:
