5" Tapered Barrel N Frame .45 Colt
I think this was made in 1990. Factory re-barrel.

Definitely look like a 26-1, since it's not in 45acp, which I believe was the chambering for the mod. 26. Don't see the marking on the sideplate that I'd expect though...Georgia highway patrol?

VERY nice! Reminiscent of one I let get away once upon a time, a 5" Model 27...enjoy that revolver!

Nice gun.
No story? Pictures but no story?
Some of us Smith collectors of 45 Colt guns would give an eye tooth
for one of those.

The barrel tapers from the frame but from that point it is as straight
as any other model 25 or 26.

Actually it is a tapered barrel like a 15 or 27, it has a sighting rib just like those guns. Visual Difference is of course, the big, .45 bore diameter.

Howdy....great gun , for sure! I think it may be a little earlier than 1990, even though I have read that date in some books. They did make the 26-1 for the Georgia State Patrol commemoration....at the same time, Smith made some 586's in 4 inch for the Georgia Bureau of Investigation. The "unmarked" over runs for the 26-1 are great guns in their own right. A four inch 586 without the GBI badge and special serial number is......well...a 586. 1987 was the 50th anniversary of the GBI and the GSP (GBI was part of the State Patrol until Gov. Jimmy Carter split them in the 70s....the bureau of investigation)...I bought one of the 586s with my badge number as the serial number. (GBI 0261) Not sure if the Troopers guns had their serial numbers as badge numbers. Interesting little side note....we were never issued the 586 as a duty gun...we had 2.5 inch 66's at the time and were going to the 469 9mm. Before the 9's were issued, you could carry whatever you could qualify with . McClure had a Colt Officers model 1911, Gailey, a 1911; Sosebee, a Beretta 380; Brank, a 3 inch 65; Owen, the ASAC, had an ASP; others had their 66; I was carrying a 4 inch 25-5...or rather, there was a 25-5 under the front seat of my 1983 Impala. We usually didnt carry guns back then. Different day, different time. Still have them all.....but I NEED that 26-1!!! Joe in GA.

Is this a 25-5 frame or a later version?? I wish Smith put that 5" light target barrel on more of their N-frames. Results in a 5" tubed "mountain gun". I'd really like one in 45ACP or 10mm.

FYI, who your father retired from isn't a state secret.
I too retired in 1991 from the New Jersey State Police.

I thought my point would be obvious. Why the mystery? "Major metropolitan police department" is comical.
Never mind. Initially I was curious, but I don't care anymore.

Are you sure that this gun is not a -9, where the 9 is struck to look like an 8. Back in that day, Smith chambered all the even dash versions of the model 25 in 45ACP. The 45 Colt versions were -3, -5, -7, -9, etc. You might want to have that gun lettered. I'm thinking someone decided to put a leftover 26 barrel on your 25's frame. Definitely, an unusual offering from S&W, if it left the factory like that.

You're right, it is 25-9, I had to look at it sideways in the light!

Interesting. If I were to hazard a guess, I'd say it was a 25-9 that had a leftover 26-1 barrel put on it for the trials as a demo gun. The lettering on the barrel is different from the 26-1s - even the ones that were overruns. I'm guessing that someone heard about or saw the 26-1s and contemplated an order for w very similar piece. I'd letter the revolver if I were you.

Were the 26-1's in .45 ACP or .45 Colt? Also, what to do...pour bullets through it, or make it a safe queen? I finally brought myself around to dry firing it, DA pull is typical for a 25-9 or 29-5 or 29-6, heavy. SA Pull is typical S&W, perfect.

I would letter it before shooting it. It is a very unusual variant. If you have the box and other stuff that came with it, save them, too.
It is a really nice piece.

Shoot it!
I bought a 26-1 with the Georgia state patrol logo on it for a shooter. It was a lot cheaper than having one made up, it shoots great!
