Default 686-8

I just purchased a 686 4" stainless .357. Under the serial number I see 686-8 inscribed. What does that mean? I see folks talking about 686-2 or 686-4 but I have no idea what that means. Can someone enlighten me?

It is hard for me to word what I want to say, here goes . When the 686 was first made it was a 686 no -, then they wanted to upgrade or change machine work to cut thier cost - the number would go up. Like 686-1, next change would be 686-2, then 686-3, on and on. The 686-7 was a special run of 686's in the 38 super. hope this helps

Ok. That makes sense. Are there manufacture years attached to the "dash" numbers? Something like 2009-present for the -8?

Don't know about the -8, the -7 was made in 2003.
