Ashland Model 60-1 ?
Saturday, I bought what may be an Ashland Model 60-1, S/N: AIV0431, 2", round butt, adjustable rear sight and a high serrated ramp front (no box or paperwork), but after doing a bit of reading in the SCSW and here, most of the know Ashland Model 60 serial numbers have been in the ALU prefix range, so now I'm not sure exactly what it is.
I may have to letter this one... would anyone care to throw in their opinion?

Quite possibly you bought a model 60 that someone added adjustable sights to. This was not uncommon
You might want to post a picture. I would like to see what your front sight looks like. That may shed some light on the issue.

Thanks for the quick response...
I haven't had a chance to take any photos yet, but after looking at some of the other 2" adj. sight Model 60 photos posted here, the sights appear to be factory installed.
Until I can get around to posting photos of the actual revolver in question, her are some links to threads containing like models, in which you can clearly see the front sight:

Thanks for the links. However, I did not want to see what a factory original front sight looks like, I wanted to see what your front sight looked like.
I wanted to see if your front sight looked integral to the barrel or if it looked like one that had either been pinned on or silver soldered on.
I am somewhat familiar with the revolver, I own three Chief's Special Target revolvers myself....two model 60s and a model 36. I carried one of the Ashland CST guns from the day they were introduced in 1985 until the J-magnums came out in 1996.
I am waiting for a 2" Chiefs Special Magnum Target is introduced so I can begin carrying one of those. Right now the model 60Pro is as close as I can get.
Congratulations on your new wheel gun.

The revolver isn't with me at the moment, but after looking at it yesterday under a 10X opti-visor it is definitely machined integral to the barrel; there are no pins or weld joints and the proper, original matte finish remains unblemished at the sight blade & rib location.
Looks like you're trying to corner the market on adjustable sight center fire J frames...
Hmmmm, maybe you're the reason I only have one Model 50 in my accumulation; someone keeps snatching them all up before I get a shot at them!

The book could just be incomplete. The authors do the best job they can, but S&W has made a lot of guns over the years. The authors know they won't catch everything.
The SCSW is still the best value for the money for anyone interested in learning about S&W firearms. The only thing I can think of that would be better would be to live next door to Mr. Roy Jinks himself.

Were these front sights really machined integral with the barrel? They'd be wasting an awful lot of steel and it doesn't make good economic sense. These 2" barrel adjustable sight revolvers really look goofy but I'm convinced they fill a useful niche.

Thanks stonehorses; this is very helpful hearing of a known original example outside of the ALU serial number range.
I'm beginning understand why some members in other related threads believe there may have considerably been more then 660 of this version produced, as the prefixes seem to be all over the board.
And I agree with Mr. Sinko; they do look goofy, but the only niche I found it useful for (so far anyway) was filling an empty slot in my motley S&W accumulation.
