price check 45lc mountain gun
Just got my Bday money etc and am looking at a mountain gun at the local gun shop. Its an IL model
they want 700.00 for it. good price not so good?
Thing looks like its hardly been fired, not a scratch, just a minimal ring on the cylinder.
any advise would be great, thanks

Hello Dave!
I don't know where you are but the Lock Mountain guns are
certainly the least desirable.
I have purchased 2 625-6 Mountain guns here in the $600. range.
If it is the only one you will ever see, and is perfect, then
$700. is your price.
If you shop for a while for a no-lock 625-6 or even a 625-7.
you may find a deal on an auction site.
But, it may take some time.
Patience is the greatest virtue in gun shopping.
The saddest examples are all over the auction sites with ridiculous
prices paid for ordinary guns.
Good luck.

Its a good caliber if you reload. The price is good for a great revolver. Don,t worry about the LOCK go on and buy it if you like it.

I agree with this assessment.
Th eprice is too high for an IL model.
Find a 625-6 in the $650-$700 range.
I have 2 of them and they are keepers!

625-6!!!! Oh, and start cringing guys.....
I would like for you to find a 625-6. It is the best of the 45 Colt Mountain Guns.(IMO) It is enhanced and has a longer sight rib with a tiny bit more front weight. A -7 is fine, but they have the shorter front sight rib. Look under postings about Mountain Guns on this forum and you will see the differences. I have posts and maybe even a thread with my Mountain Guns in them. The mountains guns are very sporadic...,you find them, then they become hens' teeth. If you have a little patience, you will find a 625-6. I have put brutal loads through mine and it is as tight as when it was brand new. It is Crazy accurate also. There is a -7 for sale on this forum in the classifieds if you look. Chris28 or something like that has it and for $700, I believe. My -6 is my most usable Smith of all of them I own. I'm in Alaska and can stoke some Toklat Grizzly loads, or Kodiak, as they are more widely known,(340 grain at @ 1300FPS) or shoot cowboy loads to fill the pot with rabbits or grouse. My main load is a 300grain Hardcast at 1150FPS. This is more pleasant to shoot than most .44's with a 240gr bullet. Buffalo Bore makes a nice problem solver for the 45 Colt that consists of a Hardcast 325 gr. bullet at an honest 1325FPS. This will get your heart going! I've retired my Casull as my -6 is more pleasant to shoot and can come close to that serious whoop you-know-what if it needs to. It is a whole lot cheaper too. Just something for you to consider..............Good luck in your choice. Sprefix

Sprefix, I had never noticed the front sight base difference between the -6 and -7 ! Is your -7 barrel about a quarter inch longer than your -6 like mine is?
DS52, that's not a horrible price, depending on where you are, but around here I would hold out for a pre- lock. Either the -6 or the -7 as Sprefix has said. They are both phenomenal guns... The -6 gives you a grooved backstrap and forged internals, the -7 the MIM smoothness/consistency plus a frame-mounted firing pin.
Of course you could always buy that one and shoot it until you find a pre lock...

I had a 25-13 about three years ago and I kind of regret getting rid of it (never really could find a good set of grips that I liked). It had the lock which removed and I then tuned the action a little bit. It shot very well but again, handload for it, its worth it. I paid $550 for mine and it was like new, but this was at least three years ago.

I have the 25-13, it has the lock, and has proven to be a very accurate shooter. The cylinder mouths are all .452, and it absolutely loves my RCBS 270-SAA bullets (285gr) at 1000fps. I paid $600 for mine used 3 or 4 years ago, and while I don't care for the lock, I would not trade this one for one without the lock, it shoots too good. It is a good companion on hikes and hunts, riding nicely in a Simply Rugged Pancake Holster.

Charles, barrel length is the same on the -7 as the -6. They are both right at 4". The front sight rib extends farther back about a quarter inch or so more from the muzzle on the -6.

The lock can be very easily removed and the plug inserted and no more ILS worries. Even better its a stainless gun so a little polish and elbow grease and the L arrow can be gone. My 629 has the slightest blemish where you can just make out the circle the plug leaves. And the price is pretty close to the going rate where I live, so unless you are a very patient man... I say jump on it!

New guns are high - and the IL makes no difference to me. If that MG is really 'LNIB', that isn't a terrible price. I agree with the old saying that you cannot pay too much for a good revolver. Also, the price paid for a good revolver is soon forgotten. Now, a turkey, it's easy to pay too much - and you won't forget what you paid for it!
Here are my three 625's, two MG's in .45 Colt, a -6 & a -7, and a 625JM - a -8 - in .45 ACP.
As to the difference in the -6 & -7... my -7 was bought new by my wife 8/02 - and was to be my first-ever S&W - boy, what it started. I swapped a Ruger .45 Colt 5.5" Bisley BH for the -6, which was LN (no box) and suffered from a shadetree 'spring job' (Clipped rebound spring - the burr drug - and 'recontoured' mainspring was bent out of plane.) - a pair of new Wolffs fixed it. The -7 still has the slicker trigger - and groups better - and it has the MIM parts vs the -6's forged parts - go figure!
Don't buy a 625 - or 25 - MG in .45 Colt unless you reload - you'll go broke feeding it! If you reload - which I soon started after getting that first MG - it's no problem. Stay away from a steady diet of '+P', ie, heavy and fast, loads. At standard SAAMI spec's, it'll last forever.
Now, if you don't reload, you can always go for a .45 ACP 625 - like my 625JM pictured. You can buy 250 UMC 230gr FMJ ball ammo at WallyWorld for $85. It's a frugal 'big bore'. And - you can buy .45 Auto Rim and not need moonclips. I regularly load standard .45 Colt loads - like a 255gr LSWC - in the Auto Rim, so you can also shoot '.45 Colt-ish' loads, too.

As for ammo my brother has a nice reloading set up so I have that covered since he and I used to shoot alot of 45lc.
Thanks again everyone.

I think you should look for an older model. Here is a 625-6 that has the hammer mounted firing pin and no lock. Take your time, you will find one.

I bought this 25-13 last year from Gun Broker, used, $660 with shipping and local transfer fee.
The lock doesn't bother me. Gun shoots lights out. It came with these finger groove grips. I shoot mostly cowboy action light loads, but it will handle enough for "protection" in the wild.
I put a Wolff spring kit in it and slicked up the innerds a bit.
