Default 586 no dash 4" info

trying to assess value of 586 no dash 4"
no M mark
square butt
as far as I can tell from serial # ABF4***
it was manufactured between oct. & dec of 1982
target grips dated 1987 so I assume not original to the gun
almost mint condition - barely a turn line
shoots great
contemplating selling and looking to see what the other forum members think a fair price might be
I have less than $500 in the gun
ultimately would like a model 27 but not sure whether to hold onto this as they are no longer made

any and all feedback appreciated

also, love the pachmyr grips on the L frame 386 night guard - are these custom compact grips available for a square butt frame

Thanks in advance
Ron

I would guess about $500-550 as a fair price as described. Rubber stocks for a square butt will not be as compact as those for a round butt frame, but the Hogue Monogrip or similar style that tapers smaller (instead of flaring larger) at the bottom would be most similar.

Default I would...

Save the money up. Keep the 586. Then you would have TWO nice guns! But that is me.

The model 27 has a cult following for many reasons like one it was the first 357 Magnum made, had a checkered steel top strap which is unique and beautiful. Some people including me think it's the best looking revolver S&W ever made.

The 586 is a wonderful revolver and your no dash is an early one but I don't see a huge collector market for it unless it's unfired since leaving the factory and has all the original goodies that came with it and even then I don't see it being worth a fortune anytime soon.

There is no guarantee that the Model 27 you buy will be a better shooter then the Model 586 you already have as there are a lot of variables that go into what makes one revolver a better shooter then another even in the same Model type and production run.

I think I would wait and get a Model 27 later and like another poster said you would end up with two wonderful S&W revolvers.

I have a 586 no dash (no M stamp) no problems with anything I have put down range thru it. And a 27-2, both are fantastic revolvers and I am glad I have both. I also have a Pre 27 from 1955, another jewel in my safe. Don't sell the 586, you will be posting later your mistake you made, as yours sounds like it is in great condition. I am sure some of the pro's on the forum will be telling you the same thing. They are great shooters and a little different from each other in their own unique feel. And since you already have it, save your money get the 27 and enjoy both, you will be glad you did.

I have a 27-2 and have had a couple of others. I also have a bunch of early L frames; mostly 686s but including a 4" 586 like yours. The 27s are beautiful guns as has been stated, but I think the L frame guns are an ideal platform for the .357 and my 586 gets a lot of range time. I agree that you might be kicking yourself in the rear sometime later if you let it go.
All the early L frames (4" and up) were manufacturerd with square butts.

Thank you to all for the advise - I will go with the collective wisdom here and my gut reaction to hold on to it. It is a joy to shoot as is my 17-2 which also gets a lot of range time.

If I may - is it possible to get the Pachmyr compact custom grips that are on the 386 Night Guard for my 586. Since my girl friend and I both shoot this gun and have shot the Night Guard, we both took a liking to the feel of the Night Guard grips.
Any advise much appreciated.

Rwoodcec,

If you can swing it I would keep it and save for the model 27 you want.
Oil it up and put it in the back of the safe for 6 months or so,chances are by then you will have your new revolver plus that 586 still waiting on you. I'm betting you will be glad you still have it,if not you shouldn't have a problem selling it for $500-$600.

This "technique" has worked for me in the past and there's no reason it can't work for you. LOL, I have found it very hard to sell a piece I already own.
