I have seen several posts that talk about people finding grease inside their older S&W revolvers. It got me to wondering about using oil or grease inside revolvers. I have only used oil in my revolvers, and limited grease to slide rails on semi autos. Do you any of you use grease inside your revolvers or do you only use oil?

Just oil for me. Ballistol and/or Shooters Choice FP-10.

So far, everything's worked fine and cleaned up easily using those two products.

NO grease, just gathers grit and gunk and then acts as a lapping compound. I use mil-tac,or mobil -1 5w30,sometimes, any good oils fine, light use. For years I have told most non gun savvy people to justr buy a can of 3 in 1 oil at the grocery store. Sometimes they look at me crazy ,like it doesnt say GUN oil.
This month in American HG mag ,Bowen talks about lube and says 3 in 1 is good oil,I think I will cut it out HA! Good Luck

Mobil-1 oil.

Thin coating on moving parts works wonders.

I lube the sliding surfaces with Lubra Plate Assembly Grease (The Original White Grease) Comes in a big tube from NAPA Auto Supply.
I oil the pins, springs etc with my home brew gun oil. A 50/50 mix of Dextron ATF and Mobile One 5W-30.

I've never used grease of any sort and have lubed all my guns with Breakfree CLP and have done so for 20 years. Never have had a problem.

Some people like nothing but oil. Some use both oil and grease, and some swear by grease alone. All seem to work pretty well. I think the bottom line is to use some sort of lubricant and re-lube as needed. Use whatever you like, but use something.

I've never considered Mobil-1, what a great idea! I just use gun oil right now, about 1/2 drop in the usual places.

This is what I found inside my 6" 586 no dash when I cracked it open. It's why I always strip and carefully inspect and clean all new to me old guns. You should have seen some of the crud I've found in old .22 target rifles. Then I reassemble them using only a light touch of oil and on some key areas I may use a grease.

Holy Fat Batman! That looks like it went into the BBQ alongside a porkbelly.
I use a very small amount of moly lube on moving surfaces.
Teflon oil if I don't have moly at the time.

I was using Break Free CLP, but I recently started trying Gun Butter for lubrication (still use BF for cleaning). I haven't used it enough to decide if one is better than the other, but Gun Butter works very well.

I don't use a lot, a drop in maybe 6 or 7 different points, and I usually only do it about every month or two. Haven't had any problems and everything works fine.

Been using it for years in a mix called Ed's Red, my gun are clean, actions are slick as a whistle, and not one speck of rust.

Ed's Red' Bore Cleaner
