Just picked up a 45 Long Colt Smith & Wesson Mountain Gun of GunBroker. Its Pre-Lock but still brand new (old stock). Should be able to register it with Smith & Wesson still right? Will post more when it actually comes in. Anyone have a 45 Long Colt Mountain Gun. Do you like it?

I have a 625-6. Really like it! The only thing I don't like is the black sights, looks like yours has that covered. Looks like someone has changed the front to a red ramp, so you get a bonus there.

That's part of what made me jump at it. Most Mountain Guns are straight black sights like you say. Its supposed to be brand new (old stock) though. I don't know if Smith ever offered them with Red Ramp or what. I'm going to attempt to register it with S&W though.

I have one. I bought it new when they first came out. It was a bit of an impulse buy. I have not fired it a lot but it is a very accurate gun. I think the red front sight on yours could be a replacement. As they are pinned in it is no big deal to change one.

These two 625-6's are both excellent shooters and all-around fun.

I have the 25-13, blued, Mountain Gun .45 Colt. Shooting it the other day. I like the reduced loads for longer range sessions. Your wife needs to get some 200 gr lswc over 5.6 Trail Boss or 255 gr lrnfp over 5.2 Trail Boss and get that baby broken in. She might like it so much you will need to get one of your own when you return.

I have the same 625, I got mine from a member here on this forum, however when the member I got mine from, when he bought it, it came with a fitted 45acp clyinder also, an after market gunsmith did the conversion.

It shoots Outstanding with both cylinders, when you get back drop a note I have some great mid range loads (recipes) for the gun, you wont be sorry, its a great Smith, this one is one of my favorites.

Does anyone have Bantam Grips for their 625? Would that be comfortable for my hand. I have medium hands.

The Hogues that are on it will work fine for medium hands. I have run smaller grips (Spegel boot grips) on a 3" 625 when concealability was a concern, but there wasn't any real difference between them and the Hogues when it came to handling the gun.

Congratulations on your new 625. I've had mine since they first came out, and it's probably my favorite revolver. Carries easily, shoots accurately, and hits with a 255 grain 45 slug. You could try Ahrends round butt grips. I've got them on mine and they work well in shooting, and they're small and round enough for concealed carry. I'm pretty sure these came with a black front sight. Mine did and I had to change it out for a red ramp to install night sights. It's a keeper!

I have had Hogue monogrips on my other revolvers. They are very comfortable, but I wanted to get wood Bantam Grips to dress it up. Making it more concealable doesn't hurt either. Think they'd be comfortable? I am pondering Spegel too.

I had one and regret giving it up...however I do have one in .44mag..

I also have the blued 25-13 and love it, it shoots my 285gr RCBS 270-SAA bullets very well.

Wife picked it up, she says its in great shape, no rust or anything. She already cleaned it for me. Gotta appreciate that! She says the logo is slightly faded though. Maybe from factory? Its a

I bought one in 45 long colt when they first were announced. Somewhere along the line I added the .44M, 45acp and 357 mountain guns to the pile.
My 45LC came with black sights I ordered and changed them out to RR/WO myself. I also changed out the hammer/trigger to target style(donated from a 29). My alltime load is a cast 255 gr swc pushed by 8.5 grs of unique.

I have one of those 625-6. You are going to like it.

I have a pair of them. One in blue and another in stainless.



I like them very much. Not too heavy but plenty of power.



Now as to the cartridge name.

While it is true that in 1872 when the cartridge was first conceived it was named the 45 Colt and I have never seen brass headstampped 45LC. There is however much historical basis for the 45 Long Colt name over the past 80 years now.

We need to go back to just before World War I when Remington introduced the 45 Short Colt aka 45 Government.


If you look in a copy of Cartridges of the World you can learn more than what is in my short post here.

Ammunition boxes were labeled with one of the two names, but both were available. The 45 Colt and 45 Short Colt have exactly the same case dimensions with the exception of length as can be seen in the photo below.


Just as the 45 Long Colt is simply headstamped 45 Colt, as can be seen in the following photograph, 45 Short Colt was also headstamped 45 Colt.


This cartridge was produced in large quantities until sometime after World War I. It would not have been unusual for a man to walk into the General Store back then and wanting to buy box of 45s and have the store clerk ask "Long or Short?"

While the 45 Short Colt is no longer on the shelves of our local emporiums and it is no longer necessary to use the word Long when asking for 45 Colt ammunition some of us just like the sound of it. You know nostalgic.

But some of the finger groove combats are fine as well.

Great find! You'll be very happy with it.

Mine is a 25-13 and the first handgun I ever bought. Its a superb shooter. My standard load is a 255g Keith over 13g HS-6. I've had great results with the same powder charge and the 250g XTP. When I'm in bear country or just feeling ornery I'll load it with the same 255g Keith over a charge of 24g H-110. Plently of power for anything in the Eastern US and just about as hot as needs to be run through a S&W .45 Colt. (recoil is definitely in the "not fun" category, as well.)

Even Colt has been known to use the Long Colt name.

CrossRifles, MOST MGs do have black sights but my 629 MG has a red ramp. My 686+ and my 625 in .45 Colt (ya gotta drop that "Long") have plain black sights. The 625 MG is a great shooter (as all the MGs are). You will enjoy it. Thank you for your service, and stay safe......

Hey Allen Frame are these Rosewood Boot Grips? With or with out the 3/8" extension?

They're called extended boot grips, and I think they're Cocobolo. I have an early Spegel Cocobolo extended boot grip and it looks about the same.



I had Craig custom checker these for me to leave part of the backstrap smooth so that I could more easily readjust my grip after a reload.

Instead of finding a 45ACP cylinder, Pinnacle-Guns.com: Pinnacle High Performance Custom Gunsmithing has a modification that for $85. you can should 45ACP using moon clips in your 45 Colt gun. I purchased a gun that was done, and just sent out two more cylinders from a couple of 3 inch 625s to be done.

A .45 ACP cylinder installed in a .45 Colt revolver will have a lot of fore and aft motion when the cylinder is open. The frame lug controls this motion.

I believe the Pinnacle conversion would fill your needs better.

Juat a thought before you change those grips. I put S&W 'Combat' grips (similar to Bantams) on my 629 MG and the round grip allowed it to roll in my hand and the cylinder latch hit my thumb and, well let's just say it hurt and it did cut the skin.
I put the X frame Hougue's back on and sold the 'Combats' and vowed never again. I have used wood grips (round to square conversion) with no problem, but I will never again use any grips shaped like those.
