Default New to me model 624

Just scratched the .44 special itch once again! I picked up this very nice model 624 no dash from a friend who was trimming down his collection. It is a 4", serial number AHB6xxx, dating it to 1985 (first year of production) according to SCSW. It came with the factory grips, box, and a letter from the factory certifying that the gun went back to be checked under the recall and was tested and passed. We agreed on a price fair to both of us. Here's some pics:

This is one of the very best field revolvers ever produced (a Mountain Gun before it's time, so to speak). I've had both my 4" and the 6½" since they were first produced.

One of the best targets I ever shot (standing at 25 yards) was done with the 6½" revolver:

Here's my 4" (I have the box with the Red Circle on it signifying it has been checked and cleared).

Dale 53, that is a fine group, good shooting. And I have to agree to your comment about this is one of the finest field revolvers ever built by S&W. I bought my 4" in 1985 and it has been my loyal companion on many desert trips, camping and hunting. It wasn't until I recently joined this forum that I found out about the recall. I had to dig through a couple of layers of dusty gunroom stuff to find the box. There on the label was the faded circled red C. Well I was much relieved because for 20 plus years I had been shooting Elmer Keith type loads, with no ill effects except to the targets sometimes.

N Frame No.1, the grips on your revolver look like they were cut from the same log that mine were, except my grips (stocks) do not have the speed loader cut out. Just the football shaped recess. Enjoy your new revolver, I'd love to fine another with the 6.5" barrel.

Best regards from Nevada duke.

I'm the fortunate owner of a 4" and a 6" 624. They are among my favorite of the Smith's I own. The 6" is probably the best N frame for me. It is lively, for want of a better word. The light, tapered barrel, I believe, is the offspring of the 1950 Target. The 4" is the best holster gun for most of what I need. No pig could resist a well placed shot between the eyes.

I use 8gr of Unique or PowerPistol with 250gr. Keith. Easy guns to shoot well.

Now, for a Model 24, then a pre-24, than a 1926, then a second model, and then finally a triplelock. Shouldn't be a problem!!!!!

Nframe, that's a nice example of S&W's finest revolver! I've said it before and I'll say it again, the 624 is the most handsome double action six-gun ever made, with the N frame mountain guns a close second but they have round butts, not square like a proper N frame. I have only one 624, a 4 incher, bought used without box or papers, that needs to go back to S&W for the safety check. I guess I'll have to bite the bullet and send it in soon.

Default Model 624

Congratulations on a fine acquisition! The 624s are great revolvers. Just Mountain Guns ahead of their time. Who knew?

I put a set of Executioner stags on my 4" 624 and both the grips and the 624 are very happy, especially in their holster going for a walk.

Best,

Dyson

My 4"er is at S&W being checked out right now Timbo. Keeping my fingers crossed that it'll be back soon.

Got any pics of those stags on yours Dyson? I'm planning to put a set of Grashorns and a Tyler T on mine when it gets back.
