642-2 2.5" And a 'Hitch'.
It was just there. What could I do?
Brand new. Model 642-2 with a 2.5" barrel. And get this! the tag said $380! After rendering unto the Dept of Revenue, $409.45. Now comes the hard part. I have to drive 85 miles back home before I can play with it. Life is just hard sometimes.
Dating these new Smiths is real easy. The fired case is dated
1/18/2010, not what it's intended for but ...
I shot it today and as the picture shows, not bad at 7 yds. with 158 gr. +Ps..
There is one puzzling thing. There seems to a 'Hitch' in the trigger pull. All goes as normal, the cyl.rotates up to lock and then it takes 3 times the usual pressure to finish the pull. It doesn't do it every time or every 5th time. There is no rhyme or reason. It does it shooting and dry firing. It seems totally random. This is like one of those noises in your car that never happens when the mechanic is there. HELP!!! Any ideas? A solution? I'm going to scratch a hole in my head!

Interesting. If you're comfortable removing the sideplate, that's what I would do. Then take a look around. Otherwise, send it back to Smith & Wesson and they'll make it right. There's a good chance it just needs to be cleaned out inside.

I got a 637 with the 2.5 inch and it does the same thing! But like your 642 it does shoot real nice and on the money.

Call S&W and tell the the story. They should send you a shipping label and fix it free of charge. You shouldn't tinker with it yourself. It's a brand new gun.....

Try turning "internal lock" on then off. My 642/CT did the same thing when new & out of the box. Never had a problem after that...2,000 rounds later...still OK.

I'm pleased and disappointed that others have had this problem. I feared it was just some new form of rumytisum I was unaware of before. Or that it could all be in my head with the many other problems I'm told are there.
I always remove the side plate and lube a new gun. The 'hitch' was there before and after the lube job. I saw nothing that could be causing the problem.
I have one other IL gun (21-4). It, of course, has never given a lick of trouble.
I will work the IL. It's simple but it may take awhile figure out if it worked. As I said, the 'hitch' is random. If it comes back, off to S&W!
Thanks all. Any other ideas will be entertained.

Well, the 'Hitch' got worse. It would hicup once, sometimes twice in a cyl. full. I figured something needed to be done.
I performed a 'lockectomy'. This had two affects:
#1. The 'Hitch' Is gone. I've put 75 rds of a mix of standard and +Ps through it and it's just gone.
#2. The trigger pull is much smoother.
I never put much stock in the 'IL' horror stories. But I'm a believer now. I guess a 'PLUG' is in order.

My wife's 642 did that and replacing the lock with the PLUG rectified it.

So what is the explanation? Is the lock rubbing on the hammer?

Explanation: mechanical sliding- the dreaded Coriolis effect.
Either that or too much useless **** added to an almost perfect design by a committee of political wimps. I dunno. -S2

I should have known. I thought it was a defective connuter valve!
