Default Model 60, 2", Square Butt

I'm looking at a Model 60, 2" barrel, square butt. I find no reference to this model in the SCS&W. Can anyone provide me with further info, when made, product number, etc.

Thanks!

Default M- 60

This line of the J frame has a long history. The first ones were .38 Sp. only and now they are .357 mag capable. I am not sure when the SB was available. More info is needed, like dash number, that may have a bearing on the configuration. Others here will have more knowledge than I on the subject.

My mother owns a model 60 2" square butt that I purchased used around 1990.

Yea, these were a special run, not sure of the distributor either. I'm pretty sure they reference these in either the 2nd or 3rd edition of the SCSW (dont have either w/ me right now.)There was also a run of 3" square butt model 60's, both are pretty scarce but I personally have seen a few more 3's than 2's.

Probably not. In the threads I have seen on this subject there is precious little information available from the forum members. It is not mentioned in either of my S&W books that I can find.

At the same time the 2 inch square butts were available, there were also a batch of 3 inch heavy barrel square butt Model 60's for sale. They were advertised together in ShotGun News by a distributor for who they were made.

I bought one of the 3 inchers; still have it. I bought it in October, 1984 and my dealer had to order it from the distributor for me. S/N is AEV65XX range. These aren't mentioned in SCS&W III, either. I wanted a 2 incher square butt to go with it but couldn't afford both.

My notes from the time of purchase say that my 3 incher was one of 5,000 made for John Jovino Inc. My guess is that the 2 inch guns were a similar deal for the same distributor.

The 2 and 3 inch both were made for John Jovino and advertised in shotgun news together. I bought a 3 inch and traded it even up for a M25-2 which I still own.

Default 60 SB

I picked up a 2" a couple of years ago for $400 out the door, in the box, and did not look to be fired much. Jovino had a run of both 2" and 3"

Default special order code a source of data?

I just picked up one of the 3" Jovino model 60 revolvers and reviewing this thread wondered if S&W could track the special order number and determine how many of these guns were produced? Does any forum member have connections to factory production data?

Heres a two and a three incher. Jon Jovino in NYC was the distributor who had the special run produced. This came up a week or two ago again...and I called the Jovino shop in NYC. No one knew any idea how many were produced. Then again I didn't talk to the Owner ...only salesmen.

WOULD be a good inquiry for Roy Jinks.

These have been discussed a few other times. I would certainly think the 2" and 3" SQ butt guns from Jovino would bring a bit more than your standard S&W snubbie. Especially one NIB like yours.

I have never tracked SOLD Jovino guns on any of the auction sites. I've not seen any for sale.

R571xx Can this serial be verified as a Jon Jovino? Another thread seem to indentify the serial range. Thanks !

I'm sure because of the limited run, the SBs should carry a bit more value. From a practical standpoint I'd prefer the RB. They're just more versatile. There seems to be a ton more choices of RB grips and the RB can be made SB with a conversion grip. I don't believe you can go the other way.

Default The serials I have access to...

My 2" guns; #AEB14xx and #AEC56xx

3" HB; #AEU78xx and #AEW19xx

3" gun box markings... Spec order 4306 , Product Code 102304

I just posted a query to Roy Jinks up above on the SWCA side of the forum. Gave him the PC and special order codes. He may be able to tell us how many were produced.

I'll post any reply.

UPDATE.... Mr. Jinks stated "The run was for 1,000 units, most were 3" configuration".

When I take my scratched up RB 60 out for a walk/shoot, I slap on a set of S&W J-frame SB conversion Targets that turns it into the most comfortable snubbie (IMHO).
